Mate of mine bought a new mobo, CPU and ram.

AMD 6core, AM3 DDR3 Mobo and 1600 DDR3 4gig.

Installed it into his case with existing Hard drive, IDE DVDrw, 700w PSU. Using onboard GPU.

Every time he gets to installing devices on XP the pc crashes with a blue screen!.

Tried different CPU, HD and ram. Still the same. Tried with WIN7. It just hangs.

He had the mobo replaced. Still the same!!!

Could it be a faulty DVDRW unit? Bit unusual if the 2nd mobo was kaput. Help!!

Cheers

PSU would cause it to stop at installing devices and blue screen? It stops at the same point everytime. Also, CPU is not overheating. It runs fine.

It as to be the PSU if all other parts have been changed, what PSU are you using the AMD Hex core's and real power killers. also what CPU cooler?

Are you OC'ing?
Is the CPU cooler upto the job?
What PSU?
All other thing you have tried so has to be one of the 3 listed

yes the PSU would make it stop in the same place, if the install starts and put load on the system and the PSU can take it will blue screen i had the same problem when starting games and my PSU was poo

Well if everything was working before then the cupltrit is likely to be the new hardware.

However, check your is your PSU is functioning as expected. Use my guide here:

Have you connected the 4/8 pin Aux CPU power? Make sure both the ATX 24-pin and 4/8- pin Aux CPU power are connected and secure.. as per my guide..

If your PSU is ok, then check your RAM modules by using MEMTEST86+.

Check the manufacturers website for recommended voltage and timings etc.
Try running your system with one stick of RAM at a time and try that stick in different slots. If the RAM stick fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is looking at a memory controller problem. This could be CPU or Motherboard depending on the platform

4pin connected both secure

PSU tested with a PSU Tester and in another case. All ok. Ram modules tested in another PC and all fine

Both correct

Again, we tried that and all ok.

Could it be a faulty DVDRW Drive? Can't understand why it stops at exactly the same point all the time (Installing Devices)

Many thanks for ideas.

Faulty DVD? i have never have a system fail from a DVD drive, i cant see it been the DVD drive but try it if the have one in your working system

I put his CPU, Ram and HD in my PC as i have exactly the same Mobo and all worked fine. He sent off the Mobo and had it replaced as faulty. The 2nd one he had is also showing up the same problems as the first!!

RMA it.

Take your PSU and try it in his system.

What psu are you using? What psu is he using?
What board is it?

He is bringing it over later for me to try my board in his case.

My PSU is a bog standard 500w one. Not sure about his, think it is a Corsair model.

So, no chance it could be a faulty DVDRW?

He thinks that it is his version of XP as it only has SP1 on the CD. I can't see it being that. As i said earlier, i tried Win7 and it just froze after a while!

it could be a dvd drive i'm just saying i have never known a dvd make a system blue screen.

Just because he as a branded PSU dose not mean it will not fail.
You need to add up the power usage and workout if the PSU as the nut's to run it.

CPU 95w or 125w
GFX?
Mother board?
DVD drive's?
RAM 2 or 4 stick?
Sound card?
Fans?
LED's / case mods?
Hi power keyboard & mouse?
It all runs on the same PSU i would say you need 550w minimum if not more

Most AMD board support DDR3 1333Mhz and only support DDR3 1600Mhz when overclocked have you tried dropping down the ram to run at 1333mhz

sounds like they may have a faulty batch
i have had this happen to me went through 4 replacement boards all had the same fault before i got another make

The board supports 1600Mhz and i also tried my 1600Mhz and same problem.

As stated, he has a 700w Corsair PSU, i have a bog standard PSU and his components work fine on my mobo which is the same as the one he is having issues with.

How would a faulty PSU blue screen at the point of 'Installing Devices' in XP, every time?

It does sound like a faulty batch to me.

a faulty PSU would fail and blue screen at the point when you put stress on the system, it uses more power if the psu as nothing more to give it will blue screen.

But surely it is not being stresses differently from starting to install XP to when it gets to the point of installation when it is installing 'Devices'?

the blue screen says it all, it must be.

Put the CPU and ram in your system and run prime95 for 1hr if it's ok there can only be 1 fault PSU

As stated earlier, i ran them in my PC with no problems.

How does the power usage change when installing the software? I don't see it myself. Surely it is not being stressed when XP gets to installing devices?

when the CPU, ram and dvd drive and so on go to full speed/power they use more power,

if you have the 1055T 125W CPU with cool and quiet on when not in use it may use around 50W (estimate) of power but when you put load on it then it will jump it 125W of power if the PSU is failing the jump will cause the fault

Let not forget most parts in your system will work in the same way using less power when at idle. CPU, RAM, NB, SB, HDD's, DVD drives, GFX will all jump up when the install starts
