I need to install an OS so I hook up my monitors VGA (yes I haven't bought a DVI cable yet) and turn on the tower. The tower turns on but nothing comes up on the screen (no input) so I can't install from disk.

What might cause that?

Could be a lack of power to the GPU due to not having a connector from the PSU attached, although I have the feeling they beep/scream/squeal in that case.

One of a million things, but the common things are usually either missing the power connection for the graphics card, or the extra 6/8 pin motherboard supply.

Beyond that, does your motherboard have any kind of error reporting?

I'm pretty sure the graphics is hooked up fine. How might I tell if the motherboard is having problems? Since nothing shows on the monitor. All the internal parts seem to be working, so I'm assuming the board isn't fried.

could be an issue in your bios having wrong settings or needing flashing, but first can i ask you ... is it a new computer build?

it does sound like a graphics issue tho, i had the same issue when i inadvertantly set my graphics on boost in bios when i bought a new card, hammer F2 to enter bios upon startup and if you enter that no problem and can see it then i suggest you rethink your bios settings where your gcard is concerned

I'm assuming this is a new build if you've only just hooked it up?

Have you connected the extra power connector for the motherboard? It is usually in the top left corner of the motherboard, and probably an 8 pin connector looking at your spec.

If you're using a DVI->VGA adapter, try it in the other DVI port.

Can you try the monitor on another computer, or another monitor on the computer to ensure the monitor is ok?

Does your monitor have an input button? Many default to DVI, so if I plug in something to the VGA port, I manually need to change source.

As for your motherboard having problems - it isn't necessarily your motherboard, but some have digit displays or are able to beep error codes to give you an idea of what problem is, it doesn't just identify problems with the motherboard but can identify issues with other core components, too.

Well thank you Mike, I'll certainly try those when I get back home.
That isn't actually the spec I'm using (it's a new one) which has a p77p5D-E motherboard and a 6950 graphics card.

I know for sure that with the 6950, only one DVI port supports the DVI->VGA adapter. On mine it is actually labelled 'VGA' on the mounting plate.

Hopefully it is just that ;)
