A guy in work told me about Geocaching last night, as of then i never heard of it but looking into it its a huge thing.
Ive got an app on the IP4 and there is a cache withing 5min walk from me lolz

anyone else here had a go ?

We (my house) have done it a few times, one of my housemates was really into it and even has his own caches set up that he renews every so often, all hidden away in secret spots.

It's a lot of fun if you live somewhere with open fields, just for a nice walk, or if you live near any historical places, people tend to set them up there and around lesser known spots.

Portsmouth itself is pretty good for them, as is the Isle of Wight, there's loads of forts and things hidden away that you'd not find otherwise

We (as a family - wife and two young 'uns) tried this but lost interest pretty quick. While it was exciting going on a 'treasure hunt' the boys quickly got bored when we realised that the cache wasn't quite where it should be. If you want a good walk anyway and tag on a few caches as a bonus it is better.

One good thing is the trackable items. You pick up a nicknack from a cache that someone has tagged and set on a mission. After you have recorded picking it up you can then follow its travels. One little thing that we picked up when we did the geocaching (round Christmas 09) is now winging its way around Switzerland having clocked over 1,000 miles since we first found it.

My uncle does this all the time as he travels a lot. We were in poland last year and hewent off with his GPS and found an old pocket watch. There was another too that we couldn't find/wasn't there.

Used to do quite a lot of these between 6-18 months ago...

Just had a quick check and I've found 137 in total. I used to incorporate it with going running, walking and cycling to make exercising more interesting. I was good fun but lost interest eventually.

I recently got a HTC and got an app on there. I found a few more using this but the interest faded again.

I had a lot more time last year as I was at uni, but this year, the time I do have free I spend doing other things.

I've been doing ones locally for about 4 months, really enjoy it, gives me a focus to going out for a walk. Done about 12 in total I think. iPhone 4 app works pretty well for it.

I've done it a couple times and it's pretty interesting. I can understand how it can get old after a while though, so doing like other posters have mentioned and link it in with going for a run or walk would probably be the best bet for longevity :)

What's in the caches?

Sometimes there are trackable 'travel bugs' as I mentioned higher up. Other stuff is mostly pound shop/Chrsitmas cracker tat and the log book. Most of the people just sign the log (essential to prove you have been there) and take nothing.

Never heard of this before but I want to give it a go now, sadly I don't have time this week in Germany else that would be cool.

I;ve got over 20 within 5 miles of me. I fancy having a look myself. Thanks op. I had never heard of it
