does i3 540/560 work with p55 mobo's

They're both 1156 CPUs, so yeah they do. If you can find the 540 cheaper get that. The 560 is only a small speed bump (easily achievable with the 540 on stock cooler) and not worth any extra really
 
I have an i3 540 and used to run it on a P55-UD4M which cost something like £130. I now run an H55 chipset motherboard which cost half that and the processor overclocks just as well.

If you don't need the extra features of the P55 chipset then save some money and get an H55 chipset motherboard.
 
cool thanks again but i think i will go for a h55 mobo instead as i believe its the only board that enabled the cpu's inbuilt gpu which i heard if im not mistaken, very good at playing/recording 1080p content?

if thats really true then i may not game on my htpc for the time being and use it purely for watching tv/movies.

This will help my system run cooler inside and more quieter without a dedicated GPU. thoughts? is the GPU inside the i3 more then enough for playing/recording 1080p?

You're right about the H55 video thing, and not having a GPU will save on noise/heat/power. i3 540/H55 should be fine for your HD playback needs. You could always drop a more powerful i5 or i7 1156 chip in the H55 board in the future too should you need more piff.

Side note I do hope you'll be installing Windows 7 :p
 
I opted for the P55 due to Crossfire/Full Size PCIE slots, Raid, SATA3 and USB3

I feel that if i opted for the H55 with built in graphics for the iGPU and i used a seperate GPU it would look odd as i would have 3 unusable ports on the boards whereas the P55 gives me usb2/3 sata/ optical etc.
