Hi,

I've tried various settings to achieve a stable 3.2, but just can't seem to get any higher than this. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried raising the voltage?
You can't always get more MHz on the same voltage and thus it becomes unstable.
 
If you set the RAM timings to 5-5-5-18 with a 1:1 ratio to the FSB, this will take the RAM out of play right up and till you reach an FSB of 400, assuming other factors, such as temperatures, don't prevent you from getting that far. Also, which CPU cooler are you using?

as the geils dont like to be overclocked too high.
i have 2 x 2gb blackdragon 6400's.
i had to put mine at 5-5-5-18, and have them at 1:1 so they are actually at 667mhz (underclocked), at first.
also with 4 sticks of 1gb, you will need to add extra power to the NB
once you get your max fsb then go back and increase the ram

i only have a Q6600 b3 but so far have it at 3.1, but there is still more in it

also @ OP, doing a quick google check, you mobo is not the best for OCing quads, this will limit how high you can get

"GEIL's don't like to overclock much" ???? I think a lot of people will say different. Also, myself with Geil ultra have no problem getting better than 400Mhz (450 easy), and 2 colleagues have black dragon, and have no problem getting way past 450Mhz on it.

What model GEIL? Besides that, if you are at 350 on 400 mhz ram then don't worry about it, your problem is elsewhere, but I would set your memory at 1:1, rather than 7:8 for the moment :-) . For one, I would up the voltage on the northbridge A LITTLE bit. Especially as you are running 4x1Gb which stresses the Northbridge more than 2x2gb. This is more like the problem than anything else. Also.. if you have load line calibration (or a vdroop setting), then turn this off for the moment.

If you are really struggling, try the 8x multiplier rather than the 9x multiplier. A lot of people can't get good overclocks with the 9x multi for some reason.

just took your advice, and set my multi to x8
now have a q6600b3 at 3.2 with 960mhz ram with 5:6 divider

just passed 5 runs of ibt on high stress with 4 threads.
will give it a run on prime overnight tonight

I'd already changed the voltage on the NB, but will take another look. I've currently got the RAM:FSB set as unlinked, that was just the figure that the MB decided.

I Appreciate that my case / MB aint the best for overclocking so I'm aiming for the 3.2 area and then giving up. In combination with my new card it should see me right for a year or so. Also the GeiL ram is:

Not the best but all I could afford at the time.
 
I managed to get things running nice and stable as per sig. I admit the watercooling helps, but yeah I didn't have any problems with 9x multi. Have managed to get it to 3.8 or so, but am content with 3.6 for 24/7 use :). Just keep upping voltages a little at a time and testing as you go. It might be worthwhile lowering your multi as low as possible and seeing how high you can run your FSB, then balance FSB speed with higher multipliers.

"My Q6600 settings: Asus P5N-D 750i
For 3.6ghz I used this:

Vcore 1.51v
NB 1.44v
HT 1.44v
SB Auto
Multiplier 9x
FSB 1600 (can say 400 fsb in bios)

For 3.2ghz I used this:

Vcore 1.42v
NB 1.44v
HT 1.44v
SB Auto
Multiplier 8x
Fsb 1600 (can say 400 fsb in bios) or just divide the fsb by 4 eg. 1600/4=400

Cheers everyone - managed to get it stable @ 3.2 lastnight using pretty much the above settings. Temps are pretty high so I'm going to leave it as is now and see how I get on. Performance in game is already much better than my E6700 :)

For reference:

Vcore: 1.406
Dram: 2.01
HT 1.48
NB 1.58
SB Auto

8x 400 FSB
1:1 with the ram

Ram timings 4-4-4-12

try and reduce the vcore by 1 notch.
then boot up and see if its still stable. if so then try reducing the NB volts by a notch as well.
more volts = more heat
every processor is different, yours might need less volts, or maybe not ;)
