I'm kind of similar to you apart from the fact I'm still fat at 22/23stone, but I too have massive calves and I don't do anything to train them.
My calves are about 20 inches around, but with less definition than yours due to my weight, but I still leap up stairs a few at a time and can run etc, so I think it could well be because of being active whilst carrying so much weight.
That's not necessarily going to help an underlying issue he may have. Whilst I agree with the depth of squatting, squatting in this instance before getting to the root cause of the issue is not sensible IMO.
my calfs are just the one part, my thighs are just the same, whatever the string that goes up the side of my legs is simply to short and tight, the mussel has expanded and the strings have not, bow strings maybe? after a game of footy it looks like something will pop or snap.
