I've got a GTX 460 768MB edition - https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-068-GI&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1830

I've just downloaded MSI Afterburner, does anyone know what my card can overclock too for stable use? it's my first time overclocking.

Although I did find this link http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2010/07/21/overclocking-nvidia-s-geforce-gtx-460/2.

This is what I've just done:

Original settings on the left, overclocked settings on the right.

Now is this safe to use? Do I just need to check the temperature of the card to see if it's stable?

And will this be a good performance improvement over the stock settings? the author of the article says the overclocked GTX 460 is better than a 470.

Every card clocks differently. Play a graphically intensive game with some aa for a couple of hours or some furmark for a short while. If it locks up, or something else, back down. Otherwise you're good to go.

Some of these cards will go beyond 900mhz on the core and 2200 on the memory.

Running mine @ 850 core 2000 memory but mine started off as a non overclocked card sold at the lowest speeds.

The 768mb edition of the 460 is supossed to overclock better than the 1gb one.
I'm running my 1gb version at this settings 24/7. It can go further but it starts to run a bit hot and noisy at full load

What are those rather ominous looking dots on the screen..?

I hope that you are using the second profile through afterburner to overclock your card and that it applies that profile only when using 3D games and the like.

FYI I have the same card as you but I have overclocked mine to a more conservative 810 / 1620 / 2020. It does everything that I want of it @ 1680x1050.

oops - should have looked more closely.!

Of course you are right. For one moments casual glance I saw them as being a type of graphical corruption synonymous with overclocking the GPU.!

hahahaha :p. Yeah well I guess I'm not very conservative when it comes to overclocking. The card has been at this speed for ages, never had an issue and never seen artifacts. Temps peak at 79C after 1 hour of furmark. But the card never runs at 100% when I'm playing anyway. The most graphic card demanding program I use is the Unreal Engine's development kit but it uses the card only while testing.

Then you should try and play Civ V as I find that when monitoring its use it consumes the entire 1GB of memory and uses, at most, 85 to 90% of the GPU. It will also use up to 90% of my E8500 @ 4Ghz. I run at 1680x1050 with the eyecandy set to high.

Conservative - nah throw caution to the wind, well you have ;)
