hi there I am looking to get a Gaming pc for about £300. I don't need windows, hard drive or optical drive.
My current pc is an ancient:
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz (2 CPUs), ~3.4GHz
Memory: 3072MB RAM DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GT/GTO

I am trying to build one that will run Shogun Total war 2, so spec me a gaming pc for as close to £300 as possible please!
Thanks.

Also, you could buy a cheapo case/PSU combo and throw those bits in and sell them off?

If your hard disk drive is the same vintage as the rest of your kit I'd be looking at a nice shiny Samsung or Western Digital high performance drive

thats so far from being £300 its not even funny, did you read the OP?

and the psu is crap.

HDD is naff.

Slightly refined, if your happy with your current case then how about this:

Asus GeForce GTX 460 TOP 768MB NVIDIA Graphics Card £110.39

AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 640 3.00GHz £74.39

OCZ Special OPS 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit £31.99

Asus M4A78LT-M 760G (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard £49.99

BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W Power Supply £42.98

Total £309.74 inc VAT

But for the £5 extra, might as well get a new case!;)

Some components from OcUK and others from competitors;)

then you got a problem, which is easily solved by buying a new SATA dvd drive.

the motherboard only has 1 IDE port.

putting a HDD and optical drive on the same ribbon cable as Master and Slave will cause the HDD to slow down to the transfer rate of the optical drive.

What size is the HDD and what make. May be worth just pushing the boat out a bit (if you can stretch the budget a wee bit) and pick up something like a Samsung F3 1TB drive rather than a new SATA optical drive. Great investment for the future and it'll be much better than using your existing IDE HDD.

This may be true but what if he can't afford to go over budget a bit it would be advisable to buy the cheaper thing which in this case is the optical drive

the HDD is tiny and ancient (Samsung SP2504C) 230Gig.I think you are right, perhaps I should replace everything rather than short change myself.
So with this in mind any suggestions on a build that won't bankrupt me!

found a 5830 for the same prices as the 5770, in the clearance section.

and new HDD and DVD drive, all from the same supplier so delivery costs are only paid once.

5830 V 768MB GTX460 - Your decision but remember also the 460 comes with 2 year RTB warranty rather than just 90 days.

Use your existing IDE optical DVD RW.
