One Space... Or Two?

The level of obstinance from stulid in this thread is truly delicious. As a result,I am going to commit the "ultimate sin",and leave no space between either commas or full stops.Baiting an obvious troll is fun, obviously.

It's still two spaces after a full stop.

So many wrong people in this thread it is a shame the education you received is rubbish.

Trolololol.

The 'posh toff' act doesn't really work as educated fancy people at the top of business don't tend to sit on here making themselves look like complete boons :D

Not at all. Most Uni's wouldn't expect it (well, certainly not in scientific writing). Its as old as moving in a few spaces for each new paragraph. Totally outdated and un-necessary. If in doubt (i.e you are writing some work for an employer / uni) ask them what they prefer.

For my Maths Honours Project last year I chatted with my supervisor about how to write it up and, amongst other things, double spacing was discussed and I was told to use it. Personally I think it looks better as a full stop is a longer pause and the double space emphasises that.

But you'd at least admit that it's personal preference? It's interesting that your lecturer would suggest that to you as being something you should adopt in what is at heart a numeric subject, despite doing a subject which was more discursive (law) I was never told the same although admittedly I didn't spend a lot of time discussing such matters with my lecturers.

I've honestly never ever noticed anyone use two spaces (apart from when I thought it was just a typo), and I certainly haven't thought about doing it myself... Seems strange to me.

Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.

Edit: I typed the above 'hello's' with 1/2/3 spaces, but only displays as one. :(.

I just use one space and always have, if it were necessary for clarity to use two spaces because of the font and its spacing then I would but if that impetus doesn't exist I see no utility in putting in extra spaces. While I appreciate good use of language as much as the next man (possibly even more depending on who it is) there are limits to how stringent I feel it is necessary to be, the primary requirement for me is that it is clear and understandable - the rest follows.

Agreed - but I do use 2 spaces as that's what I was taught, and is now a force of habit! :) However, it's just a matter of style, I doubt it has any significant grammatical implications - it's not as if you pause slightly longer in between each sentence! :D

Yep it definitely does seem to be personal preference now. Can't imagine anyone getting into bother for using one.

It wasn't normal for our lecturers to be bothered about writing styles or grammar etc, just happened that my supervisor was pretty geeky when it came to that. He loved talking about derivation of words and proper use of punctuation and all sorts of stuff realting to language. It was quite handy if you hadn't done any actual maths and wanted to change the direction of the meeting.

I was taught two, but only use one. I didn't realise it mattered. The idea of judging a person on whether they use one or two spaces after a full stop is childish and stupid.

unles im baiting an elitist troll then i talk like dis cos it's lol
