2x GTX580s and a heavily OC'd i7 2600k only draws 583W.

3 in SLI and same cpu wouldn't need more than 800W technically.

It's too much happening, not enough bandwidth to go round and controller can't cope

It seems like sheer advertising to me. Power supplies are usually most efficient at 50%-80% those charts there seem quite elaborated to me.

With one 480 running Fur Mark and prime I was pulling 615w ~ from the mains.

503w with Fur Mark running.

Thats probably for one 580, in saying that, I have not check my max loading with the 580.
