Debian 6

Sometimes I like to kick myself really hard.

I have only just downloaded the entire 5.0.3 DVDs when I find that 5.0.7 is out.

So... I downloaded that instead. I only just got around to installing it only last week and then I hear this?

My ISP is going to get very suspicious now I recon.
 
Yes, Debian is often treated as outdated, however its also ( according to some ) proven to be the most flawless distro there is ( Lets not argue )

People actually download the DVD sets? :eek:

Just get the netinstall disc, it's only a few hundred MiBs. Once you've installed you shouldn't need to download any more installation media anyway; don't you upgrade in place?
 
I always regret getting the netinstall disks (thinking about Arch here), it takes hours to install on my internet connection and all it takes is for me to use it more than once (which i will... a lot more than once) and i'm making a net loss in terms of time and bandwidth.

Same here, it's significantly easier to just download the full ISO and run a ~200mb update once the install is done.
 
I did the net install once, and sure its a bloody good idea and it works well.

However, its been said - its easier to do it in one swoop and then update a little rather than update a whole load.

Although I think a good compromise would be to just have one CD downloaded really, cos I end up adding loads more anyway.
 
By downloading a cd you end up downloading much more than you would after installing net and running aptget upgrade. Doing that ensures the latest version and you only download what you need.

When installing the netinstall you aren't installing a little and upgrading a whole load. You are installing the least possible, and then installing what you need. With a cd you are downloading and installing old version of software and them upgrading it all.

Y'all know Debian is permanently in a state of "released", kind of. The package management is open to the public, you can come along at any time and compile sid into your own release.
