Rastamouse!

As an adult one 'might' see it as being racist but as a young child it is just a childs program, thats all.

Sounds like a group of white parents have decided to be offended on behalf of the black community. That was good of them, wasn't it? :rolleyes:


I just watched an episode and I wouldn't call it racist at all.

I don't think it would be as acceptable, no. Probably because Rastas aren't best known for suicide bombings and child molestation.
 
saying parents are the reason its an issue is obviously true but I dont see what they are getting at!! Do they not remember the programs they watched growing up! lots worse than things you see today!

The world has gone mad imo with these things. The mouse is a RASTA so its not going to speak the queens English! You have to keep with the theme!

Seriously though, it's always just a couple of section 8 mothers with too much time on their hands, then (non)story is exploded by our country's awesome media.

The "racism" side of things is a non-issue for me, I dont see how its particularly racist.

The speech thing, well I can kind of see why some might have an issue with it, Bill and Ben and the Teletubbies are slightly different as they arent actually saying "words", I suppose its hard enough to get young children to say words correctly (certainly was with mine) without trying to insist that its pronounced "thing" not "ting". So I guess I could see how it might be construed as not being terribly helpful.

It's actually not that hard if you choose not to worry too much about it. My son refused to call the hoover anything but NuNu for years. He learned that wasn't the correct name for a vacuum cleaner and adopted the traditional brand name instead :)
 
People used to complain about the Clangers for not speaking English. Incredibly, kids of the 70s can in fact speak properly.

The same thing happened with The Teletubbies.

It's all stupid. Kids don't learn language from the TV anyway, because the TV doesn't talk to them, it talks in front of them. They can't hold a conversation with the TV. Kids learn language from people talking to them. If you're worried about your kids learning English, make sure you're talking to them more than you're sitting them in front of the TV.
