Today, Sony Computer Entertainment released the following statement:

Important Access to the PlayStation Network and Access to Qriocity Services Notice

Unauthorized circumvention devices for the PlayStation 3 system have been recently released by hackers.

These devices permit the use of unauthorized or pirated software. Use of such devices or software violates the terms of the “System Software License Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System” and the “Terms of Services and User Agreement” for the PlayStation Network/Qriocity and its Community Code of Conduct provisions.

Violation of the System Software Licence Agreement for the PlayStation 3 System invalidates the consumer guarantee for that system. In addition, copying or playing pirated software is a violation of International Copyright Laws.

Consumers using circumvention devices or running unauthorized or pirated software will have access to the PlayStation Network and access to Qriocity services through PlayStation 3 System terminated permanently.

To avoid this, consumers must immediately cease use and remove all circumvention devices and delete all unauthorized or pirated software from their PlayStation 3 systems.

What this means to you

Circumvention devices and game piracy damage our industry and can potentially injure the online experience for you, our loyal PlayStation customers, via hacks and cheats.

Many PlayStation.Blog readers have asked how we intend to deal with these incidents that they have been reading about in the gaming press, and this is our initial response.

By identifying PlayStation 3 systems that breach our guidelines and terminating their ability to connect to PlayStation Network, we are protecting our business and preserving the honest gameplay experiences that you expect and deserve.

Rest assured, this message does not apply to the overwhelming majority of our users who enjoy the world of entertainment PlayStation 3 has to offer without breaching the guidelines detailed above, and we urge you to continue doing so without fear.

Sounds like a cease and dissist, ie you stop being a naughty person now and you will be fine, carry on and we'll ban your console. I expect it will happen pretty soon though, as KZ3 is out next week I would think it will happen around that time to catch the nasty pirates/cheaters etc.

The hack is just a USB dongle and doesn't edit anything on the system isn't it? I wonder how they will prove you used CFW

It's not like on 360 where you physically update the firmware of an actual piece of hardware

i hacked my ps3 to try out some emulators and to have my game collection on a external hard drive, as the games were having problems tho i went back to the official firmware and ill just stick to emulation on my pc :)

i can see why they have to do this but im sure there are a lot of people who dont do this to pirate ps3 games and cheat online

Yep and they can still do this as long as they stay off PSN or dont use any services that require it.

I don't think many people that have modded PS3s will really care, it works out cheaper to just buy a second PS3 to play pirated games then have another for your online needs.

Well what I mean is I don't think anybody with a modded PS3 really expected to continue using PSN for long, if I did mine I wouldn't, it's just the way it is.

Games are that cheap these days, it's hard to not buy them. I actually enjoy finding that game I want for £9.99. The last thing I want is more games!

Tell me about it. I've just got home from picking up Mass Effect 2 new for £4.99. I really, really don't need more games right now, but...oh well.

Even if your still using the dongle rather than the CFW - you've got to install applications to actually do anything so it will be these that they can detect once the machine has connected to PSN. If there are still traces of them on your machine and you connect to PSN from whenever they're planning their ban wave then you'll be banned from accessing it - the evidence should be pretty clear cut.

This, my friend is the $1 million question.

The game is afoot !

Not sure this would boost sales much. Aren't ps3s still quite expensive? The reason ms may have got a sales boost is because 360s can be picked up so cheaply.

Using CFW basically means giving up PSN anyway, and anybody who thinks differently is a misguided fool. Sure, there are still ways to connect to PSN with CFW 3.55, but it's obvious Sony were going to drop the ban-hammer sooner or later. It's the same as JTAG modding the 360, you choose to give up XBL access to have a modded machine.

It also appears that people who have never touched anything CFW have received emails telling them to stop else get banned. Looks like becuase their account is also registered ona PS3 that did (game sharing) they still got the email.

It's unlikely that they'll get banned though, its surely got to be a console ban only instead of an account ban.

Good. I like my games cheater free, and have no sympathy for pirates either.

:D don't hold your feelings back.. I do agree though. Its not fair for online gamers to have to play against cheats etc...

Least Sony is giving folks time to get their consoles clean again. They could have just dropped the hammer and be done with it.. I reckon quite a few will actually buy a second PS3 now, only to have one on PSN and one hacked etc...

But its good of Sony to actually give gamers time to sort themselves out before dropping the ban..!! IMO
