5850 to 6970

Surely if your looking at a 5970 (second hand price £300?), you should maybe consider selling the 5850 when the 6990 hits (£450?). Thats what i would recomend anyhoo :)

If you don't mind crossfire grab another 5850, runs as fast as a 580
If not looks like a good upgrade the 6970, if this is your choice maybe get a 6950 and unlock it?

not worth it imo you are looking at a 10-20 frames per second gain on average from what i can see.

Having sited a brand new Sapphire 5850 for £138 (not a bad price considering I bought my first for £207 two years ago) I decided to enter the world of crossfire for cheap upgrade. I had to swap the position of to keep good air flow because of the different position of the GPU cooler fans. However, I have overclocked to 900/1300 and my temps have dropped 5 degrees compared to single card maxing out at 75. My score in 3D Mark 11 say it all.

IMO if you already have a 5850, you can pick up another at £135 at these prices it’s the only way to go for now. I can’t get over how good the performance I am getting two years later by overclocking the same components.

I went from a 5850 to a 6970 and there is a noticable difference in games like L4D2 and Black ops , glad i did it

I'm surprised there's a notable difference in L4D2, I'd have thought the 5850 would run it perfectly well.

L4D2 is smoother as is Black Ops both at 1920 x 1200 so prhaps depends on the res you play at , also i was able to max all settings without lockups in Black Ops. The very latest drivers seem better for the 6970, its taken a good couple of months for AMD to sort out the 6970 imo, so a good time to buy :)

Depends how much you can get for the 5850 but normally I'd be looking at getting a lot more than a 20 fps bump for £100 or more outlay after 5850 resale.

i shouldnt be saying this as im hunting a 5850 on the MM at the mo to add to my first and could do with as many as possible cropping up on there but crossfire working i dont think theirs any real upgrade form a 5850 at this point in time worth any money apart from another to compliment the first. really forgot how insane the graphics card section was, been steering away for a while and this very subject is whats made me wonder back in.

SIDENOTE.... 6970 wouldn't be the right choice any way, 6950 with unlocked shaders would lower the cost of the upgrade but it still wouldn't be my first choice
