Thinking of replacing the power hungry GU10 Halogen bulbs in our office with some LED ones, they need to provide the equivalent amount of light (50watt). I found some but they're about £20 ea. is this the going rate for LED 240v bulbs?

So what option is there for useful energy efficient light?

In total the lighting in the office uses about 600watts.

You can get some that get close to putting out the right amount of light but they look ridiculous in most of the GU10 light fittings as they are a couple of inches too long! they also don't emit the same kind of light so are a bit of an aquired taste and are not dimable which is a problem in a lot of spot light installs.

You could do what every other sensible office does and ditch the spotlighs in favour of flourecent tubes or compact flourescents?

You can get these new low energy spot bulbs now, better then LED they have a "hidden" coil inside like the normal energy saving ones.

Light is bright but never as bright as Halogen.

Only other option is to fit the low voltage ones with transformers, as they are more efficient.

Only thing is with the cost of doing that, you could replace your existing Halogen bulbs for years I would have thought.

How much do these actually save money wise? I only like mood lighting so these seem good. But for home use do they actually save any noticeable money over just energy saving lightbulbs.

Say a 15w bulb running 6hours every day for a month over a 1w led bulb running the same time?

you mean something like a megaman - I've got some of the 7W and dimmable ones (11W iirc)and they do end up pretty bright once they warm up (takes a couple of minutes).
I'd say the 7W on a par with a 30W halogen and the 11W are not far off the 50W.
They are a fair bit deeper than the gu10 bulbs though, about an inch extra so don't fit everything), you shoudl find the non-dimmable ones at a local b&q and the price isn't too much different to online either.

As to LED bulbs, the ones I've seen aren't really that bright to be honest, nice ambient feel but I wouldn't rely on them for much else.

The new Philips LED replacements are very good and very bright. They have the same diffusion angle as a regular dichroic. I can recommend them. They should be about £15 each.

1W will add about £1.50 to your bill over the course of a year if it's on all the time.

So you'll save approx 37.5p per Watt per year if it's on for 6 hours :)

I worked it out that an 11W energy saver will save you about £15 over its lifetime including the initial purchase. Can't remember what my maths was and it was back when they were about £4 each and it was 10p per unit for electricity, so the saving is higher now.

How much light do the LED GU10 bulbs put out compared to a halogen equivalent?

Some of the 21LED ones say equivalent to 20W - would that be about right?

Probably, 20 watts isn't very bright.

There's a restaurant I go to that has LED replacement halogens, compared to the standard shop lighting opposite and the lighting in the shopping centre it's in, it actually looks like it's closed from the outside!

Sorry to dig this up but I thought it was more recent than this!

I've just put some Megaman dimmerable Low Energy CFL GU10's in my new extension and they are superb. They were about £100 for 12.
I also put in 2 Remote control colour LED GU10's in the frame of 2 Velux's and I'm so pleased with the effect, I'll post some pictures if I remember tonight. They were off ebay roughly £55 for two bulbs and remote.

dont get the 21 led in one things, they suck. Get the single bright LED which is expensive but gives out almost as much light for about 5w.

Has anyone had any more experience with these things since this thread was started? I'd quite like to replace my living room incandescents with some halogen-esque things - they're very seldom used; it's more for aesthetics, but sometimes when you need to find something you need the full lights on, rather than the floor-standing lights I have...

Something the same colour light as 35w halogens would be nice.... but cost pennies to run - then I might have them on more.

I've just swapped out the 6 50w lamps from the kitchen for 11w (could have been 7w or 9w, can't find the packaging) energy bulbs. Kitchen takes about 2 minutes to get up to temperature, but i actually find it quite nice in the morning, don't get instantly blinded when i'm trying to make a coffee.

Bulbs were on 3 for 2 at b&q, worked out around 3 quid a bulb.

Quite lucky actually, our fittings hold the bulb by the front, not the back, so the extra depth of the energy bulb is hidden in the ceiling space.

Got some pics, just need to find them now!
