Evening all,

I want to buy a car that I will commute in when the weather is cold, so it must de-mist nicely and not be too unbearable to drive in for a 26 mile commute. It needs to have at least 3 seats as I will be part of a 3 person lift share. I currently drive a VX220 hence the need for another seat + cold weather comforts. I will keep the VX as a toy :)

Yes I know the weather is looking nicer now, but I still need that additional seat. Obviously with the mileage, it must be economical to run. I have 2 cars in mind already; golf tdi or a clio 1.2 dynamique. Both get little over 50 mpg and cost roughly the same (2.5k) which is about what I would want to spend. Not to mention it will be my third insurance policy, so no 3.0 litre suggestions please! A further criteria to make it slightly more interesting, it cant be dull in the corners. I know whatever I get wont be anything compared to the VX, but I cant be dealing with mondeo wallowy handling.

Are there any suitable alternatives?

Thanks,

I'd go with a MK3 2.0 Mondeo Ghia, they come with heated seats, which I'm pretty sure a Clio does not ... guess it's an option on the Golf though, but anyway it's more comfortable, more room and you will get more for your money, cheap to run too.

I'll let you in on a little secret though, Mondeos aren't dull in the corners, they have been consistently praised for their handling and relative driving precision ...(well relative to the rest of the class at least) for years.

Edit: Oh the Mondeo has a heated windscreen aswell, very handy to have in the winter.

Unless the mk3 mondeo is a significant improvement over the mk2, then i have to disagree on the handling. The mk2 was one of the worst handling cars I have driven (not that I have driven many cars in the grand scale of things)

As for the corsa, an '07 is likely to cost more than I am willing to pay, but again, my ignorance is bliss.

Thanks for the suggestions though, all opinions welcome. I await praise on the mk3 mondeo :p

It is a huge improvement over the MK2 in every respect really. I really can't state quite how much of one it really is, but trust me ...it is. I'd be inclined to try one if I were you. I'm not saying it's a amazing, it isn't ...but it's perfect for what you want and they really are rather good to drive, and much, much better than the old MK2s.

Well I wont rule them out then! I will add mk3 mondeo to the list. I will view one locally (bound to be hundreds in Reading) and see what I think, unless there is a better car out there for me?

Ghia's don't tend to have heated seats, that's usually only the Ghia X. Having said that, my '04 80k mile 2.0 Petrol Ghia X with FSH cost me £2650 last June, so I would still say get one of those. Incidentally I bought mine for pretty much the same purpose and I am pleased with what it does.

Was that sarcasm? ...as it is actually a lot of car for the money, that's a Ghia X too, with leather and that one actually does have heated seats.

Hard to beat the Mondeo really for what was asked, I know it's a bit cliché but it's probably the best tool for the job. I guess you could look at the Focus too, but you get less for you money with them, and the MK1 focus has a rather nasty interor imo.
