Tell em 18 years the doors would have been worn/torn by now
It is shocking just how easy it appears to be this day and age to escape your obligations.
Yes I know that, I could afford to live on my own no problem, It's just my mum cannot
on a grand a month ?
Yeah, would have to be a cheap 1-bed flat though, or even bedsit. Doesn't really bother me that much as long as I have my own space. Not that much more expensive than what I am paying now living at home.
Rubbish.
4 The retail gas and electricity markets
64. Imperfections in the wholesale gas and electricity markets will feed through to the supply markets for domestic consumers and SMEs. Concern about rising prices in the retail sector first prompted our inquiry. In this Chapter we consider the factors behind higher retail prices for consumers and the different indicators of the level of competitiveness in the UK market.
Historic prices
65. In real terms, household gas and electricity bills have been rising since 2004 across all payment types.
The available data runs only to the end of 2007, so does not include the increases seen at the start of this year, which will have pushed total gas and electricity bills, in real terms, even higher.
The average current bill has risen year on year approx: Gas 15%, Elec 12%.
Prices have gone up, not everyone is in debt. Some people are capable of managing their finances.

Are you trying to be particularly obtuse here or what?
The thread is about the OPs mother who IS in debt for a start.
And as for :
Have a word with yourself and come back when you make some sense
The OP's mother has been through bankruptcy one already, I don't think I am out of line to suggest that utility costs are the biggest issue here.
Have you heard of PayPlan? Very good way of dealing with a lot of debt.
Can you buy the house with your mum (as she's the tenant)? Do they still do right to buy?
You'd probably feel a whole lot better chucking more money at it if you were getting something out of it long term.
Edit: Looks like you would have right to buy, even if it's housing association now you'll have preserved right to buy if you've been there all your life.
I might have missed something in this thread but
no help from other borther/sisters?
any help coming in from dad/mums ex?
maybe your mum needs a job that pays more?
downsize house?
It's everything pal, not just gas and electric. General cost of living eg. shopping, tax, rent, and of course the debt she's in.
This may be true but doesn't necessarily help the OP.The OP's mother has been through bankruptcy one already, I don't think I am out of line to suggest that utility costs are the biggest issue here.

I know, it was me suggesting that the cost of living was the cause of the debt.
