Council waste at its best

Same goes for the civil service. I think a lot of people forget that the country wouldn't operate without it and the "facts" about all of them being overpaid just seem to untrue. Most civil servants I know are on quite modest salaries and have had to work damn hard to get there.

This is true but it does (did) other benefits. Short working hours, flexi time, long holidays and final salary pension scheme.

I'm sure a recent study estimated that the extra benefits equated to a minimum of 15% of their gross salary.

The same study worked out that although the PM only gets paid £140,000, his benefits in kind and pension and leaving bonus gives him an equivalent salary of £600,000 per annum.

Because people should not be in this country if they do not want to integrate, spending my tax money on a diversity person is a waste

Kick out those who are disabled et al? Great idea.

Or was it simply a "if you're 'diverse', you're foreign"-reaction?

And don;t get me started on budgets in the civil service. It certainly used to be if you didn;t use your budget one year, it would be cut the following so no incentive for you not to spend the full amount. We had £50,000 left one year so we voted on what to spend it on. A storage room got converted into a full gym with a dartboard and table tennis table.

I've never understood why they operate like that.

My local council employed another council to fill pot holes! Talking about external contracting!

Shared services are quite common,in theory it is much cheaper.

Council A spends £x million on a team and machinery to fix roads for them and Council B at a reduced rate.

Council B spends more money having a bigger planning department and deals with the planning for council A at a reduced rate.

Makes much more sense than every council spending money of things which sit unused or under utilised for extended periods of time.

Some councils are getting a right hard on for it at the moment, others who did it years ago are moving services back in house.

Some things can be shared, some cannot.

The biggest waste of time is Rutland council who are too small to do anything themselves.

There are far to many of them, thats the problem
How are there too many of them? I don't know one civil servant that doesn't have to work way over their contracted hours dealing with either proper work like PMQs or wasted time from the press pestering them for non-stories in the freedom of information act.

  • Short working hours - see above
  • Flexi-time - come on, who doesn't get that these days?
  • Long holidays - 26-30 days depending on when they started and length of service as far as I know
  • Final salary pension - I still don't know what the problem is with this. You work longer hours than most, do somethign that helps the country and get paid less for most of your career so that you can secure your future. Personally, I think it's jealousy and just looking for something to moan about.

Diverse and integrate aren't the opposite of each other. There's nothing wrong with diversity, and it certainly doesn't mean people aren't integrating.

I think a lot of it is jealousy.

They made their choices and resent themselves for it, mine is worth an extra £4k a year but I could do a similar job elsewhere for an extra £5k. It is very easy to cut salaries (in many ways) but very hard to get out a contractually agreed defined benefit.

I don't agree about the working hours though, I work 37. (Most in London work 36). Working 40 hours a week would mean I am no better off either way.

Yeah I'm temping for local gov't at the moment (until late March), and "equality & diversity" are rave words at the moment (quoting exact phrase). Back in my days 2000/2001, it was called "equal opportunities".

lol at you.

Diversity includes disability, gender, sexuality etc.

Always the way the rich getter richer and the poor get screwed.
This thread could go on and on and take into account other underpaid services (Army/Nurses etc.) but unfortunately I don't honestly see things changing in the near future. :(
Or how Councils/Government spend the Tax payers money on stupid services etc.
Bottom line the hard working people in this world never get any real recognition.

At one of our AGM meetings we were told we work for the Local Authority for the prestige, not the money.
I put my hand up and mentioned that prestiage does not pay my mortgage !

Needless to say that comment did not go down well with the department boss !
Whoops,..oh dear !

Quite right.
We can help them learn the language etc, then they are on there own, like the rest of us.

Give them an inch they take a yard.

shakes fist at them :D

It was this line that grabbed my attention.
Unbelievable. Thanks Labour

Let me get that straight:

Between 2002 and 2009 spending on local authority payrolls increased by £67bn, he says.

What the ****?

Yet people have the audacity to moan at the current government for trying to make cuts?

You have to put your hand up to speak at a meeting? Huh? Do they treat you all like kids?
