And how many do you have?

I personally have 2, one is with Nationwide Building Society which I opened as my first ever account, then when becoming a student I opened a Natwest Student Account. - But now I am wondering if I should keep them both, or ditch one and stick with one account.

How many cards/accounts do you own? And why? I have seen people with a lot of multiple cards, is it really needed?

I have three. Two current accounts, one for personal funds, the other for bills and an ISA. Also have a CC, but wouldn't count that as a bank account.

Two bank account and numerous savings accounts.

These days just a Visa and MasterCard for the credit cards. I originally got the MasterCard because it was more widely accepted in Budapest than Visa many moons ago. This one is mainly used for buying “goodies” online.

I got 3 accounts & 1 joint and a credit card.

1 that my wages go in and bills go out.
1 that I put my savings in.
1 for my debit card, Its the only account I have a card for so I don't over spend when out and if I loose it and someone tries to use it it'll do the least amount of damage.

Then credit card for the bigger purchases for extra cover.

Also have a joint account with housemate for the rent/bills.

^ All Natwest

I have 2 with the Halifax, the first was one I opened when I was about 15 and just kept, it came with a Visa Electron card which isnt accepted as widely as Visa is. I decided I wanted a card that I wouldnt have to worry about being accepted so asked for an account with a Visa Debit. As I was earning I got a reward current account with the £5 a month if you deposit a grand thing.

I find having 2 quite good as I use my old one as a sort of holding account. Put my rent, car insurance etc into at the start of the month and just helps me keep organised.

I am in quite a similar situation as the OP. I have one with Nationwide and another with HSBC. According to my dad the Nationwide is not a proper 'bank' so it's good to have the HSBC if you need to do certain things (pay a wire transfer for instance). Many people have lots of account to get better interest rates ar to keep transferring balances and have 0% credit cards. I don't have any debt so have no reason for this. I also think it's good to have two just incase one card doesn't work or you have any problems, but I don't see much need for more than that.

When I read the thread title I thought 5UB's Forum account may have been hacked by a Nigerian.

2. One current one savings

I have three that I use on a fairly regular basis plus another one or possibly two that are leftovers without counting savings accounts/ISAs. The three that I use regularly were opened for various reasons and I had no need to close them down - now I use one as a current account and the other two are for short term saving towards something or other.

1 joint current account which wages go into
2 more current accounts - one each
1 joint savings account
1 ISA in my name
2 accounts for the children, on which we are trustees

I have a debit card for each of the joint account and my current account, and also two credit cards

My wife has a couple of other bank accounts knocking around with 20p or so in from back in the day. No real need for them, but it means we are "known" to the bank if we ever want to get more products from them.

HSBC with 2 accounts one for wages and one used for a dumping account.
Nationwide for mortgage :( and various ISA and savings accounts.

We have 2 current accounts and 2 credit cards in the UK and 2 of each here as well. Joint mortgage account and daughters savings account makes 6, I guess. We also have a savings account but it's useless when the mortgage rate is greater than the savings interest rate :/

I have 2 current accounts. I use one mainly. The reason that I don't close them is that for some bank offers you need to be an existing customer so it's good to keep options open (maybe).

I've got 2 current accounts an online account and a 2 credit cards

One account is for my wages and bills, one for my house renovation budget and one with a low balance for buying and selling stuff on the net

3 bank accounts, 2 savings accounts, an ISA and 2 credit cards. Apart from a Barclaycard i picked up at uni (always wondered whether it was ethical to sign people up at 9pm in the student union bar) they are all with halifax...I can open a new account online but have to go in to a branch to close one so I only use one of the savings accounts (the other pays a crap interest rate) and one current account. Even the ISA has a crapper rate than the web saver

I have two accounts but only because I haven't closed my old current account since switching banks. I only ever need one current account but we should all aim for multiple savings accounts we need. :D

I have a few accounts with Natwest - Current, ISA, Savings and another current because I had multiple PayPal accounts before.

With HSBC I have accounts in GBP, EUR and USD , in Malaysia a current + savings account with HSBC (in Ringgit)

3 bank accounts: 1 personal current account, 1 joint account for our lottery syndicate and 1 joint account for building repairs (in a building coverted into flats). If it wasn't for running a lottery syndicate and living in this particular building I would only have one account. I also have one credit card which usually gets paid in full each month, on rare occasions within two months.
