Iphone 4 - worth it?

Okay, I'll admit it.

I'm terrible with cell phones, I haven't really looked into them in a long while. But recently after switching to an O2 300 minutes + unlimited to O2 sim only rolling 30 day contract, I've got really sick of the terrible phone I'm using.

I got the SIM only until I figured out what phone I actually wanted, and about 4 months later, still haven't decided.

So... I'm considering Apple's Iphone 4. On the Three network, I've noticed that for 35 a month (inital costs of a shade under 70 pounds) you get 2000 minutes, 5000 texts and data.

My main uses for phone are calling (:p) texts, and I'd prefer to not have to lug about my slightly ageing Ipod about with me as well as phone. Also, games / facebook wouldn't be bad, as I'm traveling about 2 hours a day during the week for work - so need something to entertain me!

Worth buying now, waiting for the Iphone 5, or are three a terrible network?

Help ! :p

Well I changed to the iPhone when the 3GS came out after vowing to never buy one due to the pricing. After buying it I was very underwhelmed, it wasn't until I downloaded apps that I fell in love with the thing.

I upgraded to the 4 and it's brilliant, I can't live without mine as sad as it sounds! It's my diary, sat nav, music player, communication device be it text, call or email. I can surf the web on the go, play excellent games and have every useful app I could think of.

The only thing in your position is that the 5 I expect to be out in the Summer, if you're not fussed about upgrading then go for it.

Okay, so people think I should wait the 4 months?

I know this is like asking what way a penny will land, but do people predict the prices and deals will remain fairly consistant?

@Skidder - Hmm, I'm not sure. I'd prefer an Iphone as I know there're great apps and other features on it, as well as it makes logical progression since I've got an Ipod. Any particular android I should be looking at?

I'm assuming people guess that the Iphone 5 will be released in June / July time then?

£35 a month seems about the going rate for a top end smartphone with no inital cost, if you like apple then it's probably worth it, but if you're a savvy customer you'll want to look for a better deal imo.

Three have a pretty bad rep, the only problem I ever had with them was trying to cancel.

TBH if you think the price is too high then it is, if you're hesitating I don't think you're going to get as much out of it as you want for it to be "worth it".

But imo iphone 4 is not worth it over a high end Android phone unless you game on the thing A LOT. Take a look at the Desire HD & Samsung galaxy S.

I don't think the price is high or too low, I just don't know enough about the phones to know :p

I was thinking Iphone as I've used one briefly before, and haven't the others and know I like it. I believe it was the Iphone 3 I used however.

I also like the Iphone's music / apps store. As said, it really will be a partial replacement for an Ipod, so music clarity and "loudness" are kinda important. I've big hands, (one of the minus points about doing weights :p) so anything anything with tiny buttons will likely have me searching for a kitten to punch. :p

I'd get the ip4 now. If you wait for the 5 there will be a mad rush And short supplies so you may have to wait longer than 4 months to get one...

If you are confident with technology go for a high end android, there are many good ones coming out very soon, Moto Atrix, SonyEricsson Arc, LG Optimus 2X to name a few..

But if you are a bit of a blone or need some hand holding with techy stuff, the iPhone will be much more worth it, and would recomend.

If you like to customise and make things your own android is better, if you already like apple products then I wouldn't try and steer you away. There is nothing you can do on an Iphone that you can't do on android but that pretty much goes both ways (with the exception of customisation).

I'm assuming thats the 16GB model, the 32GB really ramps up contract prices!

I think you should go for it personally, yes Apple will release a new phone later this year but -

  • It may not be much of an upgrade to the iPhone 4 (think 3G > 3GS)

  • It may have awful stock problems and be difficult to get.

  • Your iP4 wouldn't become worthless when the iP5 is released so you could still sell it and upgrade if you really wanted.

I would suggest looking at Android and it can easily hold its own against the iPhone (and beat it in many respects) but you seem to like the iPod/iOS sort of layout and I think you would get on better with an iPhone.

You could wait and get the Samsung Galaxy S 2 in a few weeks, which is more or less superior in every way to the iPhone 4 except (depending on your preference) the software. Its Android.

For everything you have listed as your main uses, you cant really beat the iPhone 4 for that :)

Three are fine as a network.

Haha, how patronising... :p

I would attribute a large amount of the iPhones success to the fact that almost anyone can use it... However I would consider myself confident with technology yet I still prefer the iPhone, mainly because of better range of apps available for the platform.

Bare in Three restrict A LOT of websites, anything adult relate, graphic etc. You can't just remove the filter like other networks, you have to pay an extra £5. You can use Opera to bypass the restrictions but the Opera browser is shocking on iPhone 4.

Would definitely recommend the i4, network wise would also recommend 3, 3g signal wise they are fantastic. Having been on tescos for 12 months on my 3gs, i found everything about them brilliant bar the lack of any 3g signal! So browsing was slow at best. :P Having been on 3 for a few months haven't got a bad word to say about them.

I'd just go ahead and get an iphone4. If you really wanted the latest tech then you would be looking at either an iphone5 or a top end android that is coming. You clearly are not in need of that though (if you were then you would be more interested in these phones already).
