Tooth abcess!

Yup had one last week on a wisdom tooth. Hurt like hell for about 4 day. Was on antibiotics until it went down.

Didn't realise bursting it was possible or Id have been straight in there. I was poking it with a penknife for a good while but chickened out on the stab!

Ouch! Mine wasn't bad enough to be prescribed antibiotics, I guess it isn't fully abcessed. I just hope choosing not to do root canal right away was the best idea!

Root canal wasn't that bad.. just uncomfortable.. imagine the weird feeling you get when the local's injected.. then imagine it deeper in and a slightly bigger needle.

It's not that bad-

I've had an extraction and it felt nothing more than a filling- the noise isn't pleasant though.. *CRACK* CRACK* then it's popped out (hopefully) with all the roots on it.

Just got back from FIVE fillings. all on the left side of my mouth. 3 up 2 down. 5 injections for those bad boys.. face is soo numb but no pain was felt at all.. quite relaxing.

I had an abcess when I was young, needed a root canal to sort it out.

It was one of the most horrendous experiences in my life.

The dentist who was doing it, was preparing the tooth, drilling down etc etc, when he broke through the bottom of the tooth right into the nerve! I literally (and I'm not making this up) jumped up off the chair and back down again!

It is one of the most extreme pains I have experienced, I ended up losing the tooth after all that as he couldn't remove the drill bit from the tooth without causing me further pain!

Not me, my mrs, had both her front teeth done at the top, she said it's the worst pain she's ever felt and she's had a lot of dental work done so I'll take her word for it .

My dentist told me that different people have different nerve layouts in their gums/teeth so while some treatment will be completely painless to some people, it'll be v. painful for others, I remember having dental surgery under local anaesthetic in hospital, the gave me 5 injections but I still wasn't numb so they just carried on, never again.

The misinformation in this thread is scary. First off:

1) Abscess: It won't go away on its own. You will need antibiotics. If your dentist suggested salt water for it that means it is reaaaally small. If you feel it's not small then ask for antibiotics, unless you enjoy the pain. Popping the abscess yourself is not that smart when your mouth is full of bacteria IS IT? Yes you will get relief but chances are you are in for worse.

2) Root canal: The RC by itself does not hurt (obviously done under local anesthesia). The reason why it might hurt is in case you get an infection during/after the canal (because blood may enter the root or the root/gum may bleed deep down). The infection causes the pain. Best course of action when you get a root canal is to ask your dentist for an antiobiotics prescription just in case. If the next day you have pain that is getting progressively worse then get the pills (note: you may have slight pain after the RC but it should be getting less and less, not worse. Also, if you bite and have pain when you do that means the filling need filing and you should go to the dentist to sort it out).

If you have a problem that needs a root canal and you ignore it then you will, most definitely and unavoidably, end up extracting the tooth.

Drilling a hole in your tooth doesn't hurt?

Yes there is anesthesia but I've never not had pain when I've had my teeth done, that's with 4 different dentist practices as well in 3 different cities!

The dentist said that root canal can take an hour aswell, sometimes more. That's madness!

A root canal's duration depends on the number of roots. A molar for example can have many roots and thus take more time to treat.

been there done that nearly killed the dentist doing it after two injections
its painful as hell

If you have pain during any dental work then you should ask your dentist to give you another shot. You should not be in pain under any circumstances, that's what anesthesia is there for.

No because the doctor will have given you a couple of shots before. Only crazy people would have a root canal without any anesthetic!

EDIT: way to go for selective quoting. I said:

Bad dentist. Dentists have ways to put your jaw nerve to sleep when doing root canals.

Most horror stories originate from very-very bad dentists, especially when people are young and their parents keep taking them to the same dentist ignoring the child's pleas. In this day and age no one should be in severe pain doing any kind of dental work.

I had one recently. The pain is intense.

The procedure of a root canal isn't anything like as bad as people make out. When he's stuffing bits into your skull there are the tiniest amounts of EXCRUCIATING pain, but by the time you have reacted to the pain it's already over.

The worst pain was the third injection into the roof of my mouth. Lasted a good 15-20 seconds.

Don't believe the horror stories (if you have a good dentist).

Did you actually read my post?

Let me show you again:
