Budget Card

I'm looking for a budget card, somewhere between £50-£80 to use for mild gaming - mostly older stuff I've bought in the Steam sales, but it would be nice if I could run modern stuff at a passable rate in a decent resolution.

So far I'm looking at HD 5670 1GB GDDR5, but I don't really know much about the low end of the market to know whats worthwhile.

Any ideas?

At that price point you'd probably be better going used, although you can't access the members market yet as you don;t have enough posts. I reckon you could get a 4870 or maybe a 4890 and certainly an 8800GT which is still a very capable card.

I think second hand is a good, sensible suggestion. However, take a look at this, it's on special offer this week and is only £10 over budget. If you can't find a second hand 4890 then consider one of these.

I've also included a useful link which should give you a fairly good idea of what's what in the world of gpu's. :)

Btw - forgot to ask, what resolution are you running?

theres nothing wrong with the HD 5670's i'm using 2 of them now in my system running in crossfirex. Im able to run all the latest games on high setting and at 1920x1080 without problems. So i would recommend these.

I agree, two in crossfire does deliver nicely.

Yeah, shame that. If he does get a 5670 then I'd advise going for the ones with ddr5 memory, rather than the ddr3. Just done a random google on a benchmark for one 5670 1gb and I must admit it did peform better than expected, though looking at the price differences (bearing in mind the special offer) if I was the OP then for the sake of just over a tenner I'd still go for the next card up, but hey, either way I don't think he'll disappointed.

Just spotted this as well. :) He needs to bear in mind the lower memory here, but providing he doesn't start cranking everything up too much he should be fine. Throw of a coin, toss the budgie in the air and see if it bites.

Should be fairly decent for what you were after doing, it will definitely play all older games and should still be OK for the newer titles with a few settings turned down.
