What do you think?

I feel that if it were any other country, we wouldn't get involved. But it's Libya, and they have a lot of oil...

This telling the OP to give an opinion is getting as boring as RSS posts.

What do you think?

 it's not like he has just posted a link like others do, he asked a genuine question to which he himself is unsure about. I think his OP is valid :/

Meh, this is a non news article. So we have 800 troops ready to deploy. I'd expect this whatever the situation. They can't do a lot, its not an invasion force.

You say that as if its a bad thing, when in reality it is of course both obvious and entirely appropriate that a country would want to help out in a situation whereby if things got worse, its own population would suffer be it economically or otherwise?

Like it or not oil price and the supply of oil is CRITICAL for our economy.

exactly, they need a stable country to get oil they dont care just like they didnt care all the times when thousands of people were running around africa with machetes in ths 90s....

tbh im hoping we get our arses kicked one of these times teach us to stop meddling in other countries afairs, we only ever pick on the weak countries anyone who can put up half a fight get left alone like north korea...

i bet when the chinese turn on there leaders america and the uk dont wont come to help

I think the fact that Libya is not very far from Europe has a lot to do with this too

But the army always has a QRF anyway so I guess the 24 hours thing isnt really suprising

Sorry guys, forgot to finish my post :o.

I do believe that it's to do with the oil (sweet light, the good stuff apparantly).

Although maybe there's more to this? Stability in the middle east and so forth. Which then, I guess is also related to oil!

I'm split on this though - I agree that we need oil but I still don't think we can just go wading into foreign affairs. If they stop supplying us with oil, what are we going to do? Invade them? It just doesn't seem like the ethical thing to do.

I can see this happening in a few decades anyway, once oil supplies start to run low and we can't find any more resources or alternatives. When that happens, I don't expect the countries with the remaining oil reserves to last very long...

At the end of the day I find it's useless to argue about human rights and the plight of other people. Some people truly aren't bothered about others and they see an intervention only necessary if beneficial to us. Some people worry about their fellow man first.

Each to their own really.

Ah the rolleyes, a sign of a well worded and solid argument. Not.

You are correct in that we wouldnt offer military assistance to the Chinese people but this is becasue to do so would be suicide given China is a nuclear armed state.

You don't pick fights you cannot be sure to win (Waits for somebody to mention Afghanistan..).

wouldn't have to, the Chinese are in a league of there own when it comes to putting down rebellions, the arab states ( Libya etc ) are rank amateurs by comparison.

We're not exactly bullying Libya - it just imploded and we are trying to prevent it turning in to a crisis.
