Maybe for some, however it depends on motherboard and what you have installed obviously lol, but saying it's a waste is not true if you run a singular card. Having a usb3/sata3 card, now theres a waste lol

480 vs 6970

Running 820 gpu core, 4050mhz ram on the gtx480, standard voltage and in 3dmark 2011, straight performance test I am getting P6302........................mates GTX580 gets P5796.............
To me the choice is right there lol, although the 580 will ramp too obviously, but with that 480 and aftermarket thermalright shaman cooler, cost is around £250
I wouldn't get to excited about 3d mark scores TBH.
Granted, I only used that as an example. Regardless of 3dmark, I am getting higher frames in my games than a standard GTX580 gets, that was the point I was making
