Going OCUK tomorrow to get a new GPU but really unsure which one to get. Got around £220 to spend can stretch for more if its worth the extra. Seems the main 2 choices are the:

MSI GeForce GTX 560Ti OC Twin FrozR II 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £215.99

Or

XFX ATI Radeon 6950 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - £229.99

Computer is used for gaming only, which is the better card or is there another?

Thanks

with my limited knowledge of graphics cards, i am going to suggest the asus geforce gtx480

it comes with a free copy of far cry 2, is a little bit cheaper than the other two cards, and the benchmark of the card is mugh higher than either of them.

heres some comparisions of framerates, power usage, etc of the cards

i believe you can change the 6950 into a 6970 with some setting changes, but that is well beyond me

i will give a few warnings though:
- i am new to computer building myself, so wait for someone else to confirm this is a sensible thing to do
- this card uses quite a bit of power
- it produces quite a lot of heat (the standard fan is just fine, but make sure said fan is not right up against the case

if you could post the rest of the parts of your computer (specifically the power supply), that would let me know if your computer would be able to run it

3 choices really 560, 6950, or 480 as stated above.
Out of the 3 though, I would dismiss the 560 unless noise is your priority as the only way it's better than the other two is cooling.
6950 will unlock at least the shaders taking you to more or less 6970 speeds (you can at least oc it to match it or surpass it, mines can do 1GHz).
480 Cracking powerhouse can oc to 580 speeds at the price of noise/power usage and (I'm going to get grief for this)possible pci-e connector burning due to excessive heat.

Super easy to change the bios with simply clicking on a batch file, instructions are on the sticky(if you only want the unlocked shaders you can just swap the bios files around).

Forgot to mention will be running it at 1920 x 1080. The 6970 is better than all of them from what I can gather so surely if the 6950 can be unlocked to 6970 speeds, thats the one to go for?

Thanks

Looking at anandtech, the GTX480 seems to outperform the 6970 in most games at 1920*1080, and not forgetting it can be overclocked to GTX580 speeds. If you are not bothered about heat and noise I'd recommend going for the GTX480, it's great value at it's current price.

Just been reading the posts and wondering can you overclock all gpu's? Sorry really new to all this lol :)

Most modern day cards you can, but to what extent depends on a few things, the important ones being how good the cooler is on it.

Edit: Welcome to the forums btw! :D
