General Headphone Audio

Well I got some D2000s for my Birthday yesterday, and I really, really like them. I wouldn't like to choose between the D2000s and my HD 650s at the moment TBH. Most of the music I listen to ATM involves pretty hefty bass, which was a little disappointing with the 650s (although they're brilliant for everything else, and not exactly bad for bass - just a little light for some genres). The D2000s have bass in spades which is a pretty novel concept to me (always insisted on punchier stuff). I hope the novelty desn't wear off!

How are you finding them? How do they compare (!) to upper mid-fi cans like the HD 650/K701/DT880/whatever? Genuinely interested to read what you think of them as headphones in that bracket are out of my immediate reach, but really do interest me.

What music do you tend to listen to through them? Is there anything they suck/are less good at, and what in particular do they excel at?
 
I got them second hand for a good price otherwise I'd never have bought them. I wouldn't say they are worth retail price based on sound alone, as you are also paying for the luxurious materials used in its construction.

That said, they are probably the best portable/closed cans I've heard. They isolate well, are light and can be driven well enough by DAPs alone.

They are well balanced across the whole spectrum with a very slight bump in the mid-bass and a bit of roll off in the sub-bass. Overall, I prefer the more coloured sound of the D7000s, but they cannot be considered portable at all and they leak sound. I've not heard those cans you've listed although I did own HD600s. I definitely prefer the E8 to the HD600s which I've now sold.

I think genre-wise they are pretty versatile. I don't listen to classical or similar so couldn't comment on that. I listen to quite a bit of electronic music and they are very good for styles with vocals and punchy beats. The roll-off in the deep bass is noticeable in stuff like dubstep though. Radiohead sounds amazing through these.:D

I was a manic headfier a while back, now settled on the above. HD650 for pure comfort reference listening. MS2 for jamming out too! (any grado/alessandro will do that) and the DT880 (least used) for some deep bass. The Yuin PK1's cost me around $60 dollars, it is deceptively cheap looking - standard throwaway buds style but boy does it perform well. Use it for my portable needs.

They should hopefully be a nice replacement for my Creative Fatality HS 800s. I have two HS 800s but the cord snapped on my PC pair, and after using my second pair for a while, I can already notice that the wire is weakening where it connect to the headset (same place where the first pair snapped). They are also a little too snug and tight on the ears.

The Corsair ones look a lot more comfortable and the wire is braided, plus it has a lot more reinforcement and a flexible thing at the point where it connects to the headset where the HS 800s weaken and eventually snap.
 
Well after years (15 or so) of cheapish headphones and onboard sound.
I treated myself to an Asus Xonar DG 5.1 and a pair of Sennheiser PC 360's..

And what a difference...

LOL, what awesome packaging I got for my corsair headphones :D



I had like 5x the amount of air bags in there than the actual headphones themselves.

Yes indeedy :) its a Hi-MD model so can use the 1GB disks and get about 6 albums on to a disk in a mixture or Atrac3 (384kbps) and MP3 (256 VAR kbps).

Prefer the sound of the minidisc to my iPhone.
 
I had some Shure E2C's as my first good quality earphones but they were cheap in comparison to most (£40) but sounded great moving up from cheap generic headphones.

I've now got some Ultimate Ears 700's

They sound fantastic and they seem on another level to the shure's. The bass sounds great without sounding muddy and the highs are crystal clear. I think the twin drivers help even though they are physically so small and lightweight.

For my PC I have some Sennheiser PC161's but quite fancy some more expensive cans. I use the mic on the 161's for gaming so maybe I'll keep them for that and just get something for music.

Just pulled the trigger on a pair of these bad boys:

They're Ultrasone HFI-2200s and I think they look awesome.

Also added to my collection is my newly modded Xiang Sheng 708B. Replaced all the audio caps and resistors, rewired with non-crap cable, new pot, power switch and headphone socket.
 
I've wanted to try a pair of open Ultrasones. Interested to hear what you think of them compared to the D2000 and HD650.

Those Audezes look lovely. I've still not dabbled in the high end, must have a go one day.

I'll write up the Ultrasones when they arrive. I almost pulled the trigger on a pair of Fischer Audio FA-011s instead, but managed to talk myself out of it after reading through some of the big thread on headfi. They're still a 'maybe' pair of headphones though.
 
The Lyr is exclusively for the LCD2. It provides far too much power (6W into 32ohm) for the D7000 and E8. People have had their low impedance headphone drivers blow from using it with the Lyr!
