What is the best Sat Nav?

Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here, but why not use a nav app on a smartphone? I've never had trouble with my HTC Desire, and used Google maps to navigate some really remote roads in Norfolk with great success.

because not everyone has a smart phone, and for those that do maybe they dont want it stuck to a windscreen playing a poor second to a tom tom.

but yes, in an emergency a smart phone could be used :)

like my navigon over the tom tom

I've just smartphone TomTom before now and it's been excellent.

Model wise it really depends on the features you want. A basic TomTom would do the job perfectly but if you want phone bluetooth, play music on it, etc. then you have to go for the more advanced models.

Halfords normally have a good display and you can normally mess around with them.

Before buying one I would check the returns. I hated Garmin for example and ended up returning it a few days later to get the TomTom. I have an old (probably 4 years+) TomTom Go 500 which just works. Using something like Mapshare would mean you get free map corrections even if your sub runs out - not the same as map updates but better than nothing.

Oh and one other thing. Think about what maps you need before you buy. Normally adding maps is quite exepensive but if you bought Europe you'd get it cheaper than buying an addon later.

I can't vouch for other makes/models but I have 3 women in the house with a TomTom each and they have never let them down.
We also have a local firm round here called Wright's Pies and all the drivers use TomTom's for multiple routes - one route could take in 60 shops over a 100 mile radius and once again they never let them down.

I find my Tom Tom sometimes trys to take me through farmers fields on phantom tracks. It also throws random wobblys with journey times such as...

To be honest if both my ancient Navman and newer Tom Tom are sat there I'll grab the Navman unless I think I'm going to need the traffic announcements.

I have a Tom Tom Rider V2 and after 3 years of dailey use on my motorbike and in my car its still going strong.

Its been in heavy downpours and been well used. No issues and would recommend a Tom Tom to anyone.

I have had a TomTom GO-720 since they came out, I have used it about 3 times.
In fact I've had it so long the battery won't hold a charge any more. It has to be plugged in permanently
Stick with a phone app on a smart phone and save yourself some pennies.

For the record, i have an iPhone, and an iPad and have in the past used the google map on the iPad in an emergency for navigation with great success and even got the free sat nav App on the iPad too and that works great with proper commentary. However, i was a passenger at the time for both, and was holding the ipad in my hands. I just can't imagine mounting the iPad on the dashboard fore navigation, plus the iPad speakers isn't that loud either.

It was very cool though, 9.7" sat nav ! Lol

really??

i find it dire, it warns you about turnings 100yards before the event, at roundabouts she speaks in latin and the lack of 7 digit postcode entry is laughable.

I use it in dire emergencies only, the map view is pleasant though and I like the gps position in the other screen, pointless but attention captivating when in traffic jams for all of 6 seconds

I don't know which version you had but this was the DVD & Mark4 computer retrofitted onto an E46. Found it great, was as accurate and quick as a Tomtom and TMC did its job too. Just looked a bit dated on screen. The lack of full post code was annoying but you just need to put in the road name instead.

Using Co-Pilot on my phone now which is a little slower, but useful to have it in one device and cheap (£25 one off).
