Macbook refresh rumours....?

From the same article

Update: AnandTech's findings contradict the above, with Anand asserting that "there's absolutely no funny business going on here, the dual-core 2.7 is allowed to hit its maximum frequencies." Seems like we'll need to keep digging to get to the bottom of this one.

So who knows who is right :)

I'd trust AnandTech over Engadget tbh.

Just posting it for those reporting scaulded lap syndrome :)

Which model have you got? if you have the 15 or 17 then use gfxcardstatus to lock the gpu in osx if you want to keep the idle heat down. On my 17" I leave it in integrated in osx and game in bootcamp on the 6750.

Now with regards to temps I recommend you up the fans to at least 4200 whilst gaming. I found with the fans at this level I can game with it on my lap.

If you leave the default profile it lets the laptop reach 90c or so before ramping the fans up and by that time the bottom is scorching.

I use macfan in windows (but you can also use lubbos or what ever its called). I like macfan as I set up a couple of shortcuts on my W7 desktop with different fan speeds and then launch them before gaming or encoding.

Thanks for that :) After reading Anandtech's Macbook Pro review - it shows that quite a few apps use the discrete graphics when it isn't necessary. I'll download that app and just turn the discrete graphics off - and only turn them back on if I play a game with 3D in it :p

My Macbook Unibody (first aluminium one...) runs warmish when doing normal things like safari, mail, aperture etc. showing 47c at the moment. Though if I load up steam and start playing some counter strike source or something then the fans go mental and it gets toasty. :o

The again CPUs/GPUs will run fine up to like 100c so I wouldn't worry about. And surely when the alu housing gets hot then its a good thing as its conducting the heat away from the processor.

Seriously considering one of the new Pros. I'm fortunate enough to be going to the states in a few weeks, and may take advantage of the cheaper prices. I do have a few questions:

  • Is the apple warranty still valid in the UK (i believe the answer is yes, but would like to check)?
  • Do apple stores stock machines with the higher res/anti glare screens, or are these 'order only'?
  • Has anyone bought a mac in the states for use in the UK? Anyone have any horror stories?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Yep it's fine.

Sometimes, depends on the store really. I got my MacBook Air with the upgraded processor and RAM in a retail store :). Worth ringing around.

Yep back in the days of £1 = $2 I bought a MacBook Pro in the 5th Avenue store. I also bought the extended AppleCare there.
In the UK (both at an Apple store and an Authorised Service Provider) I had it worked on under warranty with absolutely no issue. Logic board, battery, optical drive, keyboard, trackpad, another keyboard, another trackpad. The only slight issue is that they have to replace like for like - so when replacing the keyboard they had to order in a USA keyboard whereas they had stock of UK keyboards but aren't allowed to use them.

The only differences are the american keyboard layout and the WiFi channels it can use. Both have never been an issue at all.

Remember that Apple notebook keyboards all have the @ symbol on key 2, and then " symbol on the ' key regardless of region. The actual differences between the Apple UK notebook layout and Apple USA notebook layout is that the UK layout has £ on key 3 whereas USA has a # on key 3 (you get the other by doing alt and the 3 key) and the UK layout's return key wraps onto two lines whereas the USA return key is only on one line.
Having both I actually prefer the USA layout!

Time to sell my Mac Pro and get a Macbook Pro and 27" ACD! Having no luck on forums selling my Mac Pro, eBay looks like the way *bleugh*.

15" 2.2Ghz shall be mine!

I sold my 3.2GHZ Mac Pro on eBay. Just have to find a decent seller.

He paid cash and collected!!

Struggling to decide which new mac to get! Got my 2008 Mac Pro on eBay but can't decide between MBA + 27" ACD, MBP 15" + 27" ACD or iMac 27".

Is there a big difference between the MBA and MBP's now? Generally don't do anything too intensive but when I do want to do something such as video conversion I don't want it to be taking 10x longer than my MP currently does.

Are the ACD going to be getting a refresh soon? I know the iMac's should be in the next few months, hopefully, so it might be a waste getting one now.

Follow your heart....

...failing that - follow your wallet. :D

It's not even a case of what I can afford, it's just whether I'll benefit from having the laptop and being able to have 2 screens when I use it as a desktop. Or just get another desktop like I currently have which has been fine.

I'm slightly more inclined to get the MBP as it's just had a refresh and buying an iMac now might be daft if a new one is out in a few months. I can always use the MBP with my existing 24" monitor and get a new 27" ACD when they are refreshed.

Jammy! I'm hoping for the same, what spec/price did you get?

It was the Octo 3.2GHz with 16GB RAM and 8800GTX.

Guy turned up with cash, and didn't even want to test it. Just took the Mac Pro, put it in his car and left.

Emailed me about 2 weeks later to make sure I'd transferred the Applecare over and that was it.

As per your situation.. I'd wait for the iMac refresh.

Did you pay the Apple price or do the sensible thing and buy 3rd party and install yourself?

Yeah I did the sensible thing got the ram from Crucial, swopped it out myself.

Have to say though this machine is the first Macbook Pro I've tried that will drive a 30" Display without getting laggy sometimes, it's super quick!!
