Earthquake in Japan....9.0...ouch!

Absolutely, but it was to demonstrate that there are fault lines far closer to home than a lot of people realise.

I always used to think the quakes that the u.k has had over the years were caused by the Atlantic fault line.
Thinking about it I have been in a quake once about 3 years ago but I must have been fast asleep.

I can remember sitting at home here in Wrexham a few years back - cannot remember the exact date but sometime about 20 years back - and I actually thought a large lorry had started up outside. The windows were vibrating. I was sat on the sofa reading a paper, when I was actually shoved forward about a foot. Whole house rattled for about 10 seconds.

No major damage but a few chimneys came down - quite an odd feeling.

Edit - just done a google search for Wrexham and Earthquake and came up with one that happened in 1990 - it was called the Bishop's Castle Earthquake - that was probably the one.

Obviously we can't be entirely sure what will happen there but yes there is the potential there for an earthquake which could generate a tsunami tho from rough scratchings it would need to be 2000 times more powerful than the highest anticipated to generate the smallest of what would be classed a tsunami - makes me glad we live in the UK right now.

I'm no expert but I believe that tho the mid-atlantic ridge is splitting away rather than converging that the geological makeup and motion is not uniform and there is the potential for events around the Azores whether quake or volcanic to generate a tsunami.

EDIT: Looks like I'm a bit wrong - in 1931 it did cause a "tsunami" tho not what we'd really class as one today.

Yes saw a documentary on that a few years ago - Mega-Tsunami. Cannot remember exactly what Island it is, but if the fault slips, they believe virtually half the island will collapse into the sea causing a Mega-Tsunami which would race across the Atlantic hitting the East Coast of the USA. If that happened most of the major US Cities, such as New York, Boston etc would be wiped out!

found this interesting
thanks to sim man for posting in another thread

this is also a very interesting read

Yes there is - found it. The Volcano is called Cumbre Vieja in the Canary Islands. Is itsn't just the US that would be hit - the article below states that Southern coast of England would get hit in 3.5 hours!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumbre_Vieja

Shouldn't be a big problem for us (in theory) theres areas of shallower water between it and us that would break much of the force and the perpendicular coastline that would get hit first and reflect most of the energy around us.

Just read about the the old fella found alive 9miles out at sea on the roof off his house, wonder how many more similar stories are there to be told by survivers.

One of the worst things about people getting dragged out to sea is, some will still be alive but the area to search is just unimaginable, and impossible, and the weather/temperature will mean ever decreasing chances of finding people alive. Imagine surviving the Tsunami hit just to be dragged with no choice out to sea, for miles with no chance of getting back in, just waiting and hoping someone see's you. :(

It looks like, is this other plant further down the cost, theres an official saying it could just be the radiation from the previous explosion and venting getting near the other plant setting detectors off, hopefully its not another plant in a more serious situation.

I'm suprised theres not been more serious problems with the reactors - the at site PGA load was 12 times the engineered tolerance (was designed to survive at an upper limit for 30 seconds but weathered twice the limit for almost 180 seconds).
