I know they are triple slot cards but if you had the space would you have 2 of these over 2 standard double slot 6970s?

Cant seem to find a lot of reviews on the DirectCU II for the 6970, though ones i have found suggest good cooling/noise output compared to other models. Seems you can overclock these rather easily too in comparison considering the coolers they come with!

I'm looking to upgrade from my 5970, though dont really want the 6990 for a few reasons as im sure most will guess.

Any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated :D

Well I do have the space and given the lack of cooling solutions on the market currently I know if I was making the purchase now I would go for the DirectCU II versions.

Full cover waterblocks for a CF solution that will be outdated in maybe less than a year from a hopefully much more powerful die shrink generation just seems a little too much for me at the moment so aftermarket air included in the warranty for £20 more per card seems like a really good deal to me. Although If I had a 5970 I wouldn't be looking at the 6000's.

You have a 5970 and you want to upgrade? For what, 5-10% more fps? Just wait until November, you will see much better gains from upgrading then

Michael,

Why wouldn't you be looking at the 6000's?

6970 crossfired gives better results compared to the 6990 across all benchmarks, with less heat and noise.

5970's dont like being crossfired, so it seems the obvious (and only) choice.

That and i dont have the patience to wait for the 7000 series as i was waiting for the 6990 though didnt expect ATI to mess that one up.

Have you seen benchmarks for 2x6970's compared to the 5970/6990? I can show you some links if you want.... There is more than 10% in it......

Well you are a fool for having no patience! :p

If you are set on getting 6970 CF and have the room for them, then yes go the DirectCU II route.

But before that, have you considered sticking in a 5870 for tri-fire?

If i was going to tri-fire anything i'd be doing it to the 6970's.

1. The 6000 series scale a lot better than the 5000 series. (from every benchmark i can see anyway)
2. Only reason i havent considered 3x 6970's is purely down to the fact i cant find any benchmarks for it.

5870 costs £300... If you crossfired it and it was crap.....

As for room, im changing my case from the HAF 922 to the HAF X, and my mobo from the UD7 to the G1 so space wont be an issue :D

5870's are around £180-200
Buying 6970's just isn't that good value for money as you already have a good setup. TBH, i have no idea why you are even thinking about upgrading. You will barely notice the difference.

Oh right, i assumed you meant the 2GB version, not the 1GB.

I still stand by the fact that the 5000 series doesnt scale well and the 6000 series is a lot better.

Ive seen plenty of benchmarks showing 2x6970s outdoing the new 6990, the new flagship model so it seemed the obvious choice.

"You will barely notice the difference."

There's a big difference between the 5970 and 2x6970's in benchmarks...

No............Because you may have the triple slot space with your currant motherboard,
But what happens when you upgrade your motherboard and then find the cards don't fit or it really limits you to what motherboard you can use... ;)

How often do you upgrade motherboards though? Chances are by the time he has a new mobo he'll have a new card aswell

That isnt an issue with the G1 Assassin ;)
