One of the Fukushima people doing a press conference in Japan (via Reuters) stated that if it does go into meltdown that it won't be as devastating as Chernobyl.

Kyodo news is saying "Higher radiation levels measured in Ibaraki"

Its a good distance away.

Here, apparently they log radiation numbers online at some site that can't take the hammering its getting now, several sites downwind of where the current wind is heading have increased radiation, they aren't very close I don't think.

Nuclear explosions require ~90% pure nuclear material

Nuclear reactors use ~5-10% pure nuclear material

It is literally impossible for a nuclear reactor to explode like a bomb. Explosions are caused by buildups of hydrogen gas

You get the impression from this press conference that the people from Tokyo power are being somewhat evasive and not telling the whole truth, certainly from the translation the journalists keep asking for straight answers.

Imagine they don't want to panic people there if it is going haywire.

No matter how bad it gets it can't reach chernobyl levels, that reactor actually totally blew up at full power and spread the radioactive dust everywhere.

The reactors are the Mk1 design which seem to imply the walls of the "2nd" line of defence container aren't as thick as the later models.

If this is cracked due to the Earthquake and the rods melt through the bottom of the 1st line of defence then it sure can escalate to Chernobyl levels.


What worries me somewhat is comparing the look of the second explosion to the design of the Mk1 BWR.

I see a vertical plume of "blackness" from the centre of the explosion that coincidently matches the area of the "plug" in the top of the 2nd line of defence containment container. If this blew due to some over pressurisation event then if and when the hot mess melts through the core container. it goes from bad to bat ****

i know what you mean.. i can't believe how long this has gone on for, this is the 4th day right?... each day i wake up to check the news to see if the situation is getting better, and it just isnt....

Yes they aren't answering much at all, which, I don't know if thats bad or not, they don't know anything, they are delaying panic, I don't know.

So, they are saying water is getting into the reactor vessel, but pressure might be going down in the suppression pool? Would that not mean the supression pool is leaking due to a crack in the final containment building. Somehow this is coming across as incredibly bad news.

What is it with all the constant doom mongering in here from people who don't know what they are talking about? Very few of us are experts on nuclear power, so constantly doom-mongering about how it's obviously going to do XYZ complete with up to the minute copy+paste from the BBC website is serving no purpose at all. It's as if some of you are subconciously willing for it to get worse!

It's such a sad situation, lets not get our kicks from doom-mongering and pretending to be Wiki-powered Nuclear experts

They cant answer truefully, can you imagine the panic it would cause. While we can imagine the worse, having it confirmed would drive the local area and possible further away into more irratic actions which a country like Japan could not sustain. Its frustrating for me like others but a control on this chaos must be maintained for the greater good.

One can just hope for the best, of all nations I could not see this one be willing to put its people through anymore exposure to radiation than possible. Its history is to poignant from WW2.

there hasnt been huge ammounts of doom mongering, i'l admit theres been a reasonable ammount of wild speculation on the power plant, but this thread so far, in my opinion has been a good place to find an update about the situation, rather than trawling through loads of news sites to find key bits of info....

Theres a load of people who are just worried about whats going on, and the reporters are suggesting its bad, from Japanese tv which has been much more reliable and NOT scare mongering, I think everyone got pee'd off at the BBC, about 12 years ago.

Maybe we don't need to come in here just to pretend to be better than everyone else.

Thank ****, I thought he was just about to announce REactor 4 was in trouble, but he is saying its now in cold shutdown, temps down below 100C, they think thats doing pretty damn good.
