First of all i dont want csi series, i thought id get that out of the way.
I just want something thats brilliant and clever, is there anything current that meets that.

Currently the best crime series (and possibly the best series) is The Killing, a Danish 20-parter. Old-school, I'd suggest Law and Order, starting about series 8: it's far better than almost anything the UK has produced. The two main spin-offs, Special Victims and Criminal Intent, are also good for the first few series. Avoid the UK spin-off as it's rubbish.

Got the wire:D

Well i think i would like a thriller series aswell to be recommended.
Ive just finished watching Battlestar Galaticca and want something just as awesome.

I'm currently watching the final series of The Shield. Managed to get the series 1-7 boxset for £30 at Christmas. Not particularly 'clever' on the face of it but as the stories get intertwined it definitely becomes more interesting.

Got that series.

So far the mentalist is the only one that i think looks good thats been mentioned.

So im gonna pick up the mentalist, but its only 2 seasons so far. That wont last me long, so i still need more. Ive made a list of series could you kind folks tell me if there awesome or not:
Mad men
Lie to me
Criminal Minds
Bones
Burn Notice
Fringe

Southland. Nothing else that's out at the minute even comes close. Very well developed characters, great scripting and a lot of twists and turns along the way. I have no idea why it's not more popular.

I love Criminal Minds, puts a slightly different spin on the usual stories.

Also like NCIS, but that may be too close to CSI for you. Characters are much more likeable in NCIS though

If you can live with subtitles then, as has been mentioned, The Killing is brilliant It is on iplayer right now and the DVD box set will be out in April.
Spiral is another subtitled joy, this time it is in French and very gritty
Mad Men is not crime in any shape or form
Justified is OK

Boardwalk Empire.

The Sopranos is an obvious one (although you've no doubt already seen this).

First couple of series of Criminal Minds are worth a watch. Season 3 started to get far too clichéd and practically became a parody of itself, so I gave up on it there.

Lie to Me is good, but i think it's only in series 2 which you mentioned may be a problem for another series above. I quite liked Cold Case but may be too close to CSi. Waking the Dead and Viceare great UK series if you havent seen them already.
