Facebook's takeover of the Internet

I can sort of see the OP's point. I dont mind Facebook but it is sort of becoming.. the internet. Last year when the local bus services were delayed due to snow (I couldnt get my car out) the only way of following service updates was using the bus companies facebook page - they had removed the live update page on their own website in favour of a facebook page.

It's this sort of thing that frustrates me, and in the long term, is more and more companies placing their net presence into the hands of a private company really that prudent?

Is that not a good thing though? Their own website might have been hammered and slow, where as facebook will be far more reliable in terms of stability at busy periods.

Exactly, it's like saying "I don't see what all the fuss is about" when referring to mobile phones, or email, or television. It's another method of communication.
dunno.gif

The internet is another means of communication, FB is an application running on it. Unfortunately FB is becoming more of a portal which in turn starts to compartmentalise the internet itself.
There is growing concern that people go through FB to access internet content (linked/hosted etc) which is not in the spirit and initial goals of the net yourself.

Now this isn't entirely bad in itself as it somewhat streamlines the internet experience for many, but do people really want FB and a few choice portals controlling their net experience?
Should they start moderating or filtering content like Apple/Google do will people be happy or will that be seen as a necessary evil to use something they like.

I love facebook, plenty of companies i buy from put discount codes up on there, couldnt imagine going without it now.

All codes end up on places like hotukdeals anyway, so using fb for discounts isnt that special :p

Personally I have a Facebook account but don't really use it, I prefer other means of communication, as such I have only my name and email address on their (with privacy settings to protect even that as much as possible).

Facebook doesn't provide, to me, any services that are worth the loss of privacy, as lets face it Facebook is purely there to data mine and sell your information, Google does the same thing but they at least serve a useful purpose to me.

I also stay signed out of it generally, and if someone/something links to Facebook I have to be really interested to bother signing in to see it, it's probably not that important.

And is it just me that when seeing a company has a 'Facebook presence' that it makes me feel 'less' of them, dunno how to describe it but I see it as a negative point (albeit a very minor one that doesn't exactly influence any decision) for the company, almost as if it seems immature/less formal.

Facebook is fine as long as you limit the privacy and your activities. I have at most 50 friends most of which are family who insisted I add them, I've totally locked down the privacy settings, have put up as little personal info as its possible to and run it on a secure server.

Simples.

It is worrying that Facebook and Google seem to be taking over much of the internet. Once they branch out into porn it will signal the end.

I'm annoyed at this also. I go to comment on a site or whatever and it's Facebook only. I have a Facebook account, but I'd rather not have everyone on it see what websites I go and comment on, etc.

Also, everyone else who looks at the comment section will now know who you are.

1. Make a facebook account with fake or minimal details
2. Access your /b/tard website whatever it is
3. Don't make whiney topics

Everyones a winner!

Another person who's posted and missed the point of the topic. My question was "how far do you think it will go?"

It wasn't to whine, believe it or not.

Then set it to only yourself can see it.

I understand your point, facebook isn't the only one trying to smother everyone. Google is worse imo. It is quite scary how rapidly it's growing, but I don't see it getting to the stage where it's involved with 90% of the net.

This pretty much.

I also notice a lot of sites have the option of using or linking your FB and therefore changing your username to your real name or putting your real name on your profile. I mean, why would I want to do that on a games site for example? What does it add?

My only concern is that in the future it wont be optional any more. Not everyone wants to be anonymous just so they can post shady stuff.

Surely it only mines what you let it. give it no info and you are fulfilling your need to be private to them.

I just don't even bother with Facebook any more. Most of my stuff on there is set to private so the only people who can see my stuff are the ones that I want to be able to see it. I don't really have a problem with places like Photobucket having a Facebook link as it could be handy to share your photos and stuff between the two sites but when places that have nothing to do with Facebook require a Facebook login I think that's just taking it a bit too far.

Facebook has kinda become an API tbh... its not really in the same catagory as other social networking sites like myspace, bebo, etc. you can create an account with bare minimum of fuss/details and it gives you a framework to interact with other sites, etc. in a fairly clever way (if you want, usually optionally) without any connection to the social side of it.

I use it as a bare minimum on the social side to keep up with friends/family and work colleagues with all the spam and crap filtered out, nowadays its basically an RSS feed of the things I'm interested in and a bare minimum of silly status updates, etc.

I have nothing against Facebook itself, just the way people use it.

I never knew people were so keen to make themselves look like moronic attention whores.
