I think it is important to point out that not all Human Societies viewed homosexuality as taboo. It is in fact a fairly recent thing.

Ancient Greece and the Hellenic Empires were very ambiguous about sexuality, bisexual and homosexual relationship were commonplace and not worthy of comment. In Rome Homosexuals were revered, also in Native American tribes homosexuality was seen as something special, not something negative. Even in Early Medieval Christian societies it wasn't unheard of within the Nobility.

It is something that has surfaced increasingly since toward the end of the medieval period, in recent years it seems to be cooling again.

It was mainly due to the grip of Christianity/Islam, when people started making a big deal about sex!
Although I heared a story of the more rural community of Islam (they were talking about very rural Afghanistan) that men would engage in sexual acts on the Thursday I believe then cleanse themselves on the Friday or following day. That piece of information was then followed by a horror story of how the senior men would target the youngers and often leave them in quite physically damaged state if they didn't comply...

And there are many stories about the other gods engaging in acts with males.
Just need to google something as "gay greek god" (yes I myself was worried about what this would return)
