Lift off oversteer

I've felt the back end of the ST220 lighten up a few times through quick sweeping corners but I've deliberately lifted off to gauge how its going to feel if/when it goes.

Feels like it will be quite progressive, I think it would take some serious hooliganisn for it to let go so suddenly it becomes dangerous.

In fact, for a FWD chassis, the ST balance-wise feels very neutral, not what I expected at all.

Progressive lift-off oversteer in a well setup FWD chassis = Good, lots of fun.

'Snap' oversteer with little or no warning = Bad for a novice driver, not so much fun.

I personally love a tail-happy FWD car, if it's nice and progressive you can really 'play' with the chassis.

I've noticed my Golf to be very snappy in terms on letting the back end go, but this is due to poor tyres on the rear and the suspension rolling quite a bit.

To be honest soft/wollowy suspension should be more progressive and less snappy then stiff suspension.

I found my GTI very neutral on the stock dampers (although it was running Venom -60mm springs), then when I added the whiteline rear ARB it shifted that neutrality backwards so it was more oversteery at/past the limit, but still nice and progressive.

Since fitting the coilovers the overall handling characteristics are the same (basically neutral but biased towards oversteer at the limit) but with more overall grip and less bodyroll. It's still nice and progressive and controllable though

Must be the lack of grip on offer from the rear tyres compared to the front, doesn't matter what I do the back lets go well before the front.

Had a brown pants moment last night in my 306gti with this thing :)

All my experiences of lift off oversteer in mine have been almost too easy to recover really, requiring little effort :P
I agree it can scare me sometimes though, gti6s have a fine line between pushing the car and oversteering, epic though :P

It is, it's very good for what it is :)

The 182 does this a lot, nothing major but it is a non-event. The brakes really sap confidence though, so I've not really pushed it hard enough to explore anything more extreme.

I've never felt confident driving my 182 from day one. I just daren't push it like I have previous cars, it skips everywhere:(

Why do they sap your confidence?

Have you looked to see if anything is wrong?

Do they all do this?

After pushing my 182 to the limit (quite literally) on track, i can honestly say its the easiest car i've driven at speed. I thought i had pushed my car near the limit on the road, but after getting it on track, there was about another 20% left over. Its hard to explain, i don't feel like im getting any surprises when driving the 182, its always letting you know whats going on. Thats not to say its easy, push it too hard into a corner and you will drive into a tree and burst into flames, and if you're pushing it and back off at a silly time, you will drive into a tree backwards and burst into flames. I highly recommend doing a track day in it though, not only are they amazingly fun cars ( i had people coming up to me in considerably faster cars saying they wish they were driving mine as it looked like i was having the most fun :D ) but you will learn a lot about the handling of the car on the limit (which is surprisingly tame)

If on cup suspension, its hard with very little travel/give. If you're going down a bumpy road at speed its gonna skip around quite a bit. Sounds mental, but don't try and correct it, keep it steady and it will sort itself out.

They are crap, but the discs and pads are well overdue a change, I'm just waiting for my chosen supplier to get some 1144s in stock, then I've got Brembo HC discs, pads and braided lines all round, on their way.

I must say, I'm mostly putting it down to the brakes at the moment, but I do not feel as confident pushing the 182 as I have other cars, even now.

The car is very communicative, but on anything short of a perfect surface it is very skittish. There is a particular private road that is probably the best driving private road over here that I could easily hit 130 in places in the ST, that I start to get scared at 100 in the 182.

Not for me, in the same way a 2 wheel drive Porsche 911 is not for me thank-you very much!
I don't want any car that could kill me just because I made a silly mistake.
