Last week there was a notice on the the staff notice board.

"all managers are to be in on Monday 28th for a meeting at 2:30. Anyone one day off are required to attend if possible, Managers on holiday are exempt"

Something big we all thought. Some of us knew what it could be about but not 100% certain. I am off this week so I couldn't attend, I could have as I wasn't doing much yesterday, but still.

Last night I was sat eating a huge take away curry and at 9:02 my mobile rang. I thought "I bet that's Lance" one of my staff. He finishes at 9. It was. So we had a chat. He didn't attend the meeting but another manager told him what's cracking off.

Morrison's are extending their opening hours. 'Awesome' More bloody work. BUT and it's a big BUT. The street departments, Fish, Salad bar, Oven Fresh, Bakery, Deli and the Butchery are to close one hour before the store closes or two in the case of the beginning of the week. As it stands now we close at 9 Mon, Tues and Wed. 10 Thurs, Friday and 8 Sat. Now we are going to close at 10 everyday (Sunday is staying the same)

Mon, Tues and Wed the Street will close at 8 and staff to be out of the store no later than 8:30 and on Thurs and Fri the close down will be 9 and out no later than 9:30. Saturday I believe will be 8 close too. All very well. We now finish earlier on late nights:D

Now, the big thing for us is the start of trade at opening time. Currently we start at 6 and this give us 2 hours to get set up (Fish bar) ready for the customers. With the new structure Morrison's are applying we are no longer required to set up before the opening times we are now going to start to put the fish on (Salads, Cooked chickens, Sliced ham etc for other departments) at 8am as the store opens.

This setting up at opening time was trialled at the 'Lab' store in Kirkstall where ideas are put into practice, some worked and some bombed this worked and increased sales impressively.

How?

Customers get a better idea of how fresh our produce is and as they see us putting it all out as they walk in they may think 'Oh look fresh fish'. Our fish is fresh but this will enforce that into our customers as some think it's not. So now as we don't have to come in at 6 we are now to come in at 7 to sort out the delivery, put the pre-packed fish on display and get the fresh ice on the Fishbar ready for 8am. Then we are to put the fish display on as customers come in.

Later starts, earlier finishes its all good and I can see this being very popular. Of course, in the early days of doing this the customers will come in and say "you sleep in late today then lol".

Like all change, some will not like it and some will. It's something we have to adjust too. I like it. I know there are some 'M' employees on here, what are your thoughts?

I don't understand Morrisons, I'm a student so I often go there to save the money. Some weeks they have cracking deals like big bags of salad for 50p and a whole range of veg/mushrooms etc for 30p yet other weeks I'd be better off shopping elsewhere. Although some absolute bargains on the reduced section if you go Mon morning.

And yes it's infuriating how early they shut. This store in Heaton is absolutely enormous yet shuts at pathetic hours over the weekend, excluding Sun of course where none of them open after 4PM.

Lost leaders. To get you through the door, into a habit of going there, all supermarkets do it.

Seeing a droolinggimp pull fish out of boxes ain't going to get me to buy more fish. :D

And anyway, are not people that shop early in the week generally the unemployed and alcoholics? I did not think they ate fish, well apart from fish fingers.

I shop there but only because it is on the way home lol

I don't mind it but if the Cooked meat counter closes earlier then it means everything will be reduced earlier meaning better bargains for me!

The Morrison's next to me is the most shockingly awful supermarket I've ever seen. I never complain in writing to companies (I just avoid them after poor service) but this supermarket was so disgraceful over 2/3 years (I kept using them out of laziness as it is the closest) that I wrote a letter twice. Nothing happened.

In what way was it awful?

Yep, me too. The fruit and veg from Morrison's goes off days faster. I've even seen rotten produce on the shelves on more than one occasion.

It's interesting: shop at Morrison's, Asda and Aldi and people get in your way because they are too thick to notice; shop at M&S and Waitrose and people get in your way because they are too up their own behinds to notice.

I shop at 2 Morrison's stores and have totally different opening times anyway, not sure this was thread worthy though :)

The fresh food seemed to go off quicker.

Yes that's the major reason we don't shop at Morrisons.

Plus I've noticed the staff on tills are always whining about customers and discussing when they finish. If they don't want to work there then don't.
