April Fuel *groan*

How much does it cost to drive 2 miles in your bmw?

40p, give or take a penny.

So yep, totally not worth doing 2miles to save £2.70/£2.80 on a tank of fuel when I get through a tank a week (lately). That equates to saving roughly £140 a year in fuel (provided the price difference between the stations is the same. ;)

Yeah, but if you only 1/2 filled your tank at the more expensive petrol station, how much fuel/money would you save through carrying less weight? (approx 30kg) ;) :D

What happens if you get to the second garage and it's 5p more expensive. Do you drive back to the first one? What happens if there's a longer queue at the cheaper garage? Do you turn the engine off whilst waiting and push it to the pump?

Just to put your amazing saving into perspective, you could save a similar amount per year by getting a relative to cut your hair, or by taking a packed lunch to work on friday rather than having a bacon butty.

I'm not saying what you're doing is wrong. I'm telling you why I don't care:p

I have never, ever, seen it to be more expensive, it is always a good few pence cheaper. If there is likely going to be a wait, I will turn the engine off actually...but I don't push it to the pump. :D
Quite often though there is a wait for the rear pumps, but not for the front ones (as people don't understand the idea of going round the rear cars filling up to use the front empty pumps...so I just jump the queues and go to the front pumps. :D

I take packed lunch to work anyway....and I don't eat it in my car. ;)

Awfully interested for someone that doesn't care. :p

I've also proved you wrong about my money saving, so you now have decided to not care. :p

I must admit. I'm with InvaderGIR on this one. I tend to use the cheaper station which is Morrisons in my case at the moment, I will fill up when I go shopping and I try and avoid the more expensive stations if I can.

There did used to be one station around 15 miles away that used to be a whole 10p cheaper than everywhere else. It unfortunately now is just a couple of pence cheaper. I used to make an excuse to fill the tank when I was passing or working in the area.

I said I didn't care about fuel prices, not that I didn't care about your money saving techniques, which I don't doubt you save £140 (in an absolute best case scenario) per year btw - I just don't share a similar view.

I agree that is best case, but the closest I've seen the prices is 2p difference, which still saves me money, so over all, by going 2 miles out of my I do save money. Now with the ones on my route increasing the prices a fair bit, seems I will/do/should save that bit more too. :)

Good good. Keep an eye on tyre pressures to save that little extra:)

my local sainsbury's dropped a penny on wednesday so filled up, it was back up to 128.9 the next day.

1 day of price drop which i happened to notice :)

Not sure what car you've got, but i'll guess that has saved you about 50-70 pence.

I seriously don't get it do I? hmm:(

I have to agree, my mates grumble at me for buying a performance car and for putting vpower in.

When explaining, how much I would save they still give me funny looks telling me am mental. Each to their own and all.

Look out we've got a new Martin Lewis. It's nowhere near 5 pence saved when you factor in driving the extra mileage.

I've also never seen 5ppl differences within a mile radius.

On a typical trip into town I will pass a Sainsburys with Super @ 132.9, a Texaco with regular unleaded at 135.9p and an Esso with Super @ 136.9.

I drive past the entrance to all three. There is no detour involved. Why wouldnt I visit the one with the lowest price

Furthermore, when I visit the girlfriend the filling stations in her area all charge between 137 and 142p for a litre of 95 ron compared with 129.9 lowest price down here. Therefore I make a point of filling before I go.

Not looking at prices does seem a bit bizarre, it has to be said.

InvaderGIR was driving an extra mile though?

I don't think i'll stop using Tesco anyway. They're the only ones that use pay at pump round here. I hate queuing:p

You said you never looked at price - I explained why you should :)

Actually in my first post I meant generally ie. ~130 ppl. It was only when people started saying they were going out their way to find cheaper fuel I began to question it. You don't go out of your way to find cheaper fuel from what you've said?

I honestly think I'd still continue to use Tesco even if Jet half a mile down the road was 5 pence cheaper. The shorter queues and p@p would be most welcome.

I'm lucky in that the cheapest fuel station around is in such a location that I cannot drive anywhere without going past it, but I probably would do half a mile for cheaper fuel purely out of principle.

We live in a free market economy, so whilst this means retailers can charge what they like it also means I can purchase from those who I beleive price the product fairly :)

Similar to a detour, then?:p

Indeed, and cost isn't the only factor when purchasing a product. As said above, I value the benefits of p@p more than I care about a few ppl of fuel.
