Didnt think it would happen to me...

When it comes to fight or flight, unless you are mentally in gear to fight at that moment most people will take the flight option. Height and weight doesn't really come into it.

Very true, but I would have at least been suspicious when he was walking over to me with a hood up and yelling "oi mate", I would at least be ready to bob and weave before taking off.

Saying what you think you would do after the event means nothing tbh. Unless you are in the situation at the time you can't really judge.

Im sorry, but I have to disagree with this fully. Surely this method, presents just as much chance of being even more seriously hurt, as it does the other guy getting a beating?

Example one...Small kid comes up and hits you and runs away...a broken tooth is suffered, but you live to fight another day

Example two...Small kid comes up and hits you, as he starts to run you grab him and smack him back, he landing on the floor, whilst down there as you start to walk away, he takes a knife from his pocket, and stabs as you walk away...You dont get to live to fight any more days.

So we all should just run away just in case someone has a WMD in their pocket?

Seriously, whatever people do is up to them, however it is not what I would do, neither is it what I have done in similar situations, even when someone pulled a knife.

If he was going to run, he shoukd have done it at the "oi mate" stage tbh.

Yes there is example three where, he gets knocked down and stays down, but is it REALLY worth it, for the possible risk that it could entail, especially living in the world we do, where petty knife crime happens as often as it does? I dont believe it could be worth it...Id make do with one punch and my life anyday!

Knife crime really isn't that common.

And also, it definitely isnt always about how big you are. One of my best friends is a monster, 6ft7, and built to match it, shaved head and a deep Geordie accent. You would not walk past him on a street alone late at night....unless you know him....And when you do, you know he would start or retaliate in a fight, never has and never would. His size gets him into trouble, as people seem to think taking on the biggest guy in the room gives them some praise, but he would never think that his size would give him an advantage, unless him life depended on it, in which case im sure he could if he needed to.

Actually, all things being equal size is a definite advantage. They have weight classes in pro fighting sports for a reason.

He should run away because everyone isn't a violent, ex-army nutjob like you. You would fight someone with a knife? really? That's a bit stupid I reckon.

Knife crime is plenty common in Scotland.

And how are all things equal here? When the guy is covered in a hoody, is ready to fight, gets the first blow in and the OP is probably half-cut and shocked and not in a wrestling ring...

A: I wasn't in the Army.
B: I am not violent.
C. I am not a nutjob.
D: Someone did pull a knife on me and I punched him in the face which meant that the only person who got hurt was him and not me, or more importantly my wife.

I suppose I could have simply stood there while he stabbed me, but it seemed a little stupid to do so.

And knife crime is fairly rare in Scotland compared to violent crime in general. With 3,839 counts of possession of an offensive weapon in Scotland last year, a 22% decrease since 2001, and only a small fraction of crime against the person in general.

If he was going to run then the actual sensible time was when the chap said "oi mate" not waiting for him and standing there in the first place. If he thought he had a knife that would have been a completely stupid thing to do, the likelihood that the chap had a knife is pretty slim, it was just some punk kid who thought it would be funny to smack someone he obviously knows is a easy target.

The best thing to have done is not allow the fella to close the distance to him in the first place, and after he did and then punched him, to punch him back and THEN leg it. In my opinion anyway.

He was walking through a Scheme, in Scotland... Trust the people that know, running away was the best idea.

Then why did he wait for the chap in the first place, wouldn't it have been better to run when he was shouted at in the first place...."oi mate" isn't something that someone you know would be shouting at you is it?

Anyway, he can do whatever he wants, I was only saying that in his position I would not have done the same.
