What's the best MMO out now, or coming out this year?

Hi there, I've only ever played wow, and quit that a few years ago, probably played hardcore for first 4 years.

Any good mmo's out that are better then wow? I've already tried city of heroes, guild wars, eve, warhammer, age of conan, and so far none of them seemed better then wow, so am yet to find an mmo that is new and fresh and keeps me interested.

EDIT: I'm wanting an mmo with amazing graphics/gameplay and to be better then wow in every way.

Was just looking at rift on MMORPG.com and it does look good but it looks like a fantasy rpg like wow. I think I want something different this time, something far away from what wow was if you get what I mean.

Oh god you're serious aren't you?

Short answer - That game doesn't exist.

WoW has been going for 6 years now, it is backed by two of the largest and most successful video games companies on the planet and makes more money every day than most MMO's released in the last decade made in a year or in fact ever made before they inevitably fell flat.

The only games coming out that have even a glimmer of hope at being as good as WoW are Star Wars and GW2, I'm hearing good things about RIFT atm but that still quite new, however if they are better, they will not be better in every way, it's just not possible.

Also good luck finding an MMO that is not set in a fantasy setting, it's what sells and as such it's what gets made, unless you've got something like Star Wars of course which is lucky enough to have it's history and stuff already set up.

Honestly I think your best bet will be Star Wars really, the chances of anything else coming close to WOW within the next few years is so small it's not worth mentioning.

You're asking virtually an impossible question to answer, what is one mans "better than wow in every way" isnt another mans "better than wow in every way".

For instance, I think that in its prime UO was better than wow in every way, and Daoc was better than wow in every way, and LoTRO is better than wow in every way and early SWG was better than wow in every way. Rift I currently feel is better than wow, some would say that EQ2 is better than wow in every way, some would say that EvE is better than wow in every way. Guild Wars 2 may possibly be better than wow. SWTOR may possibly be better than wow in every way.

Best thing you could do is try as many trials as you can and decide for yourself, because every single person who you ask is going to have a different idea of what makes an MMO great.
 
That Firefall mmo looks amazing to me, looks like a first person shoot em up but inside an mmo, I always wondered what an FPS would be like in an mmo type game. It's still in development though, any ideas when its coming out?

I see your point, it's probably the way I worded my OP I should have just put something like, "what new mmo's are coming out that look good"...coz like when it comes to first person shoot em ups, I know everyone is waiting on Battlefield 3, but when it comes to MMO's I wasn't sure what is good now or whats good to come.

Ahhh...ok, now thats a question thats a little easier to answer.

I'll include Rift as its so newly released that it could be construed as "coming out".

I liked Rift on the beta, but didn't have sufficient time for it. It had a much more complex character set up than WoW, but felt exactly like it for controls. In fact it looks pretty much like it as well (not that WoW has had one single pixel of original graphics in it's entire lifespan). I played WoW for 4 years so it got a bit drab for me, however for the limited time I played it, Rift felt like WoW but with something interesting to do. I didn't play it enough that I could recommend it though.
 
I think part of it for me is that coz I played wow so much I want something completly different really, I dont want a game that even reminds me of wow in any way. Which is why Fireball looks so good to me, graphics look great and its a first person shoot em up. So far it's top of my list.

The star wars one might be good though coz I am a big star wars fan of the movies and have always loved star wars games, I think because I love star wars so much it makes me enjoy the games even more so the star wars mmo might have a chance. Even though is it a little bit like wow in a sense coz your looking at the character from 3rd person view and walking around like that, but visuals obviously completely different.

I think for all these reasons I cant give Rift a shot coz I've seen the screenshots and videos and I just think it would be too much like playing wow again for me.

I wish when they released mmo's they either released it with a trial or gave us some indication of when the trial was released, like a release date for the trial, instead of us just waiting around for 6 months wondering when its going to happen.
 
After hours of reading and watching videos this is my final list of mmo's that look good to me:

The Secret World
Star Wars: The Old Republic
TERA
Firefall
Blade & Soul
Jumpgate Evolution

The space ones like Jumpgate Evolution are at most interest, can you imagine playing a game like freespace with a joystick in an mmo? imagine 64 players or 128 players flying space ships in a type of combat flight simulator in space, this would be so awesome. I know mmo's have been out for a long time, and there's people on these forums they say "oh I was playing this and that 15 years ago etc" but to most of us mmo's started with games like wow or eve...we dont go as far back as you guys, and I dont feel like mmo's have been brought to the masses for a long time. I just feel like the mmo genre is growing and getting better and the possibilities are endless.

We need good racing mmo's, good FPS mmo's, good combat flight sim mmo's etc etc...I think a lot of game organizations realised when wow was making so much money that mmo is the way to go for game companies and am thinking over next 5 years we'll get some awesome games.
