GTX 580 problems

Got my shiny new GTX 580 today but im having some issues.....

First off it crashed mid game after 45 minutes of l4d2, the computer completely locked up and the screen displayed a load of lovely artifact like blocks all over the screen (in a patterned effect over the top of the game)

Now i've just been playing battlefield bad company 2 and im getting lots of black squares flashing up in places, followed by a few minutes ago the screen kept flicking on and off, it'd go black for a second followed by going straight back to the game...all the while everything else was normal, i could hear the game etc going on in the background. i've set the fan speed to 100% using EVGA Precision program to see if it's just overheating but the temperature gets to about 78oC or so with maybe 81-82oC max.

Any ideas? Not entirely sure what im asking for, advice and/or recommendations to test it i guess?

EDIT: also....this thing is bloody loud compared to my old 5870! on anything above 70% fan speed!

EDIT: Just ran the furmark xtreme burn in test and the maximum temperature reached was 81oC, the room is a mild temperature at the moment so i'd sat 83-84oC is a realistic maximum and with 99% constant GPU usage nothing out of the ordinary occoured....so now i need something that uses lots of VRAM, as furmark was only using 10%

What GTX580 is this? if it's one with an overclock it could be the voltage being too low so try upping it one or two notches otherwise if it's a stock clock normal version then it seems like it's RMA time.

It's loud compared to what my vapor-x 5870 was but it's not that bad unless it hits 85% fanspeed.

It's the OcUK (or Palit) 580, no overclocking done, literally taken out of the box put into the case, driver installed and away i've gone :p I'm trying to find a way of testing the vram at the moment as it's the only thing i guess it could be, even got a new PSU today (Corsair AX750) but i doubt that'd be the problem

I know this is lame but have you tried a fresh windows install? i am VERY sure the ram is borked on the card though as i've had what you said before on previous gfx cards and it's been that.

I got the Palit one too so it shouldn't be very loud either, maybe something got damaged inside it somehow.

To be honest mate just return it if testing the vram doesn't work which you can do with the MSI afterburner application.

I've just run OCCT - the GPU memtest came back with no errors, i ran the power supply test (which i also got new yesterday) for 10 minutes and that threw up no errors

The only thing that did worry me during the power supply test was my CPU temperature....it hit 78oC in a fairly cool room! >_< think i best get a new heatsink

sycho i used driver cleaner in safe mode to clean the old ATI stuff off, im going to try some different drivers now but if the problem still occours i can only assume it's either a problem that is difficult to recreate or it's overheating when im not monitoring it.

I'm seriously considering sending the 580 back and getting 2 x 6950s in xfire. Stupid idea?

I won't miss the extra 1GB of memory over the 6950s, but what is crossfire like with regard to game compatibility these days? Still flaky?

EDIT: maybe im just being stupid, looking at the anandtech comparison i think i'd be better off finding out the cause of this problem and getting it fixed grrr

So 3 games, 3 problems:
L4D2 - locked up completely after about 45mins to an hour of play, rebooted and went staight back in ok.
BFBC2 - strange black square flickers in places followed by the whole screen flickering on and off
Crysis - Well these images should tell the story....this occoured after about 10minutes of play:

p1000337m.jpg

p1000338r.jpg

p1000339y.jpg

Sorry about the poor images but i was trying to play and take pictures at the same time :p you get he jist of what's happening though...and i dont think the GPU temperature went above 80oC during this time either.

In the first image that sort of thing was flickering on and off, had to take abotu 4 pictures to catch it on camera, the others it's like the trees and scenery went nuts.

EDIT: i should also mention that i've now tried the latest betas and the latest WHQL drivers.

Does seem as if it's the memory at fault. I had a similair problem with a gtx 280, could run furmark fine but various games would artifact within 10 minutes of playing.

Make sure they know to test it with crysis until it warms up a little, otherwise it might get tested as not faulty.

I assume you have the twin fan palit gtx 580.It does not have a vapour chamber and your right, above 70% the fan is NOISEY (for real comedy try it on 85% ;) ).I found it totally unacceptable as the fan speed would go to 80% and temps reached 90 degrees even then.Took it back and got a vapour chamber one and havent looked back, quieter than my 5870`s even with the 580`s in SLI.

Yea dash i had the fan at 100% last night trying it out with the fan maxed to see if i got the same problem....everyone i was on mumble with thought i had a lawnmower in my room :D

Also i've asked in my RMA/tech help request if i can change it for a different, more efficient model, is the gainward 3GB model quieter and more efficient? or am i going to have to go for a 1.5GB model in order to get a better cooling solution?

Doing the RMA request through the forums support section and i've linked to this thread, so hopefully they'll have all the information they need from this :)

If you really need the 3gb vram aka use 3 monitors or 2560x1600 res with high AA then get the Phantom 3gb version for real good cooling/quietness otherwise go for the MSI Twin Frozr which is great at £359.99.

I'll be gaming at 2560 x 1440 with AF on most likely, don't think i'll need very high AA settings on that rest but it may still be needed too

question is...what's the real performance difference between 1.5gb and 3gb on todays games at that res etc? is it REALLY worth it? seeing as i want a new CPU cooler as well, maybe it'd be worth me going for a 1.5gb version and usign the extra money saved by "downgrading" on the cooler...

Very very little difference(like 3-5fps in games where you already hit high fps amounts) unless you are on 3 screens you will only notice it.

AF uses very little vram whereas AA uses a good amount when it's 16x or above.

I would get the Twin Frozr 580, it's well enough for that res and a Noctua NH-D14 with the leftover cash you got since you want a quiet good cooler which it is.

Thanks Sycho, i think that is exactly what i'll do then...

To think 4 days ago i simply wanted a new monitor....the added res made me decide on new graphics card....which in turn made me need a new PSU....and now i want a new cpu cooler which in turn has made me need new memory >_< This is damn expensive work! haha

Almost feel like i might as well just go and order a vertex 3, i5 2500 and P8P67 for good measure :p

EDIT: oh i just tested crysis again to see if it was a consistent problem in that game, same map and the same problem occoured again.

If you want the dogs 580 then go for KFA anarchy edition....you really can't get a better cooler fitted on air than the accelero which it comes with as it's extremely quiet yet the 580 hits around 60c load or so max.

I am buying a HAF-X soon, 2x2tb western digital hds, samsung blueray player and corsair 1000w modular psu so i feel your pain.:p
