Roaccutane / accutane

My ex started on it just after we got together. She had to moisturise quite a bit and apparently they told her to lay off the alcohol? Not sure how true that is. At the end it she said it had cleared up some of it but she still have some redness on her back. Her back is pretty scared already so I felt for her. She only ever got the odd spot on her face but she still felt caused. She went private as her parents were minted so not sure if things are any different from the NHS in doseage/etc.

She also had massive mood swings and put on a bit of weight. However, she had also just taken the anti-preggers jab so that might have also been to blame for those two conditions.

Used that for over a year mate, my skin now looks ragged, red and worn. I've come off BP for 8/9 weeks now and you can tell :(

Did you use moisturiser? And were you using the gel or cream form?

I have been using 10% benzoyl peroxide for 2 years without issue as long as I use moisturiser.

Yes, I used moisturizer and only used it nightly. I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to it. Tried both gel and cream form

As it's steroid based, I'm pretty sure the liver is under stress etc. I think the alcohol warning is warranted, I struggled to drink at all at uni while I was on them. It turned me into a bit of a light weight for a while.

I had to have blood tests to check liver function before I could take it and throughout the course of treatment so alcohol isn't the best idea - also recall being told I couldn't donate blood for a fair while because it stays in your system for a good few years too and would effect a potential recipient.

I used it for around 6 months - completely changed my life :)

My skin was very very bad - now it's completely free from acne :)

Can anyone go on Accutane or do you have to have severe acne? I have had it moderately for years and the only time I have clear skin is when I am in a different Country/Climite.

I haven't seen a GP/Dermatologist as I have mainly ignored it as being "one of those things". I'm coming up for 20 now and it still hasn't cleared up.

Supplement with Vitamin D?

I was on it for 6 months and it totally cleared my bad acne, but it has given me Arthritis in my right wrist and lower back pain when I lay horizontal. Would I do the same if I could go back in time? Yeah. For sure I would still be a virgin and have no friends if I hadn't had accutane.

I was on it when I was 15. It worked wonders but left me with a side effect that ruined my life far more than any acne did, namely Ulcerative Colitis.

At the time I was never made aware of the link between the two but over the past few years there has been numerous court cases in the USA that have involved multi million dollar payouts as a result.

Go for it, just be very aware of the risks involved.

If anything, this photo has to be some sort of motivational to get on the damn drug!

Look at me. I was so uptight! DO IT NOWWWW.

The way I feel now is a million miles away from how I felt in my first year of uni.

I should have enjoyed that year loads, but my skin and being the young guy I was, I was obviously held up on how I looked.[/QUOTE]

dude, you've got a hot blonde hanging off your face, couldn't have been that bad:p

seriously though, amazing improvement! i never really had bad acne, but use BP on any zits i get. seems to dry them up instantly.

Horrible drug to be on, but it works.

I had 3 "mild" courses of the stuff. I still get spots but it stopped the mega outbreaks that caused pain and nasty scarring.

It's a no brainer. Just stock up on vaseline, moisturiser and head and shoulders :p

got this prescribed to me in December (4 month run to see how I go) as I have bad acne on my back. Supposed to be going for a check up in a few weeks to see how I've been getting on but I haven't started taking the drug yet as I've had a lot of bother with my family etc. I just hope the dermatologist isn't mad at me when I tell him :(

i have an appointment with the Dermatologist on the 20th of May (two days after my final exam! :D) to see about getting put on Roaccutane.

I'm looking forward to the dryness that will result, i have a serious problem with my skin producing Sebum.
i can wash my face at 8AM, and by 8:10 it'll be slick with oil already.

This i find extremely annoying, because i hate having oil on my hands, which means that every time i touch my face i need to wash my hands or feel uncomfortable until i can. very annoying :(

exactly the same as me mate but apparently the 'dryness' effect from taking roaccutane can be quite harsh (seriously dry where the skin cracks etc.)

You'll be moisturising a few times a day, applying lip balm several times a day, even as far as applying a tiny amount of vaseline to the insides of your nostrils.

Excellent, i look forward to it :)

Never went on it myself, even now when I'm 24 next month and still suffering from the same acne I had when I was 15. It's a bitch, but luckily mine is a lot better than most; it's mainly the fact that the condition isn't going away that gets me down.

My biggest problem recently isn't spots, it's sebum. My sebaceous glands have gone into overdrive, which is curious as around this time of year my skins usually sorts itself out thanks to more UV exposure (I imagine; could be mood also).

The whole "I lost the best years of my life to acne" rumination is a tough one to accept. I've been fortunate to only suffer from sporadic acne, it was never 'all the time'. However there have been countless occasions I have not gone out because of my skin. I've said to myself 'I'd love to go out, but I can't because of this frikkin' massive spot'.

I just consider it unlucky, and if anything, it makes me look forward to the day it'll be over even more. I'm just expecting the cruel twist of fate that on the day my skin clears up for good, my hair will start to go :P

It was single handedly the best decision I have ever made.

Yes, the side effects were AWFUL. The outcome made it worth it a million times over.

This tbh. My skin still isn't perfect but Roaccutane was definitely a good thing for me to take, and found that having better skin increased my inner confidence too. Yeh there's plenty of side effects but I only encountered dry skin and 2 nose bleeds!
