Xbox 360 Vs Playstation 3

I had the decision made for me (got it free) but I'm glad that I have a 360 because:

xbox live isn't free, so I can just not buy it so that I don't spend my entire life playing COD online
I prefer the controller

I wish I had a PS3 because:
blueray and superior media capabilities

I've been having the same dilemma and PS3 is winning for me now. I had an XBOX 360 up until last year as I just didn't play it. PS3 seems like a more comprehensive package and, for me anyway, will mostly be used as a media player/PVR and it's just a bonus that it can play games!

Xbox 360:

Pros: Xbox is only 2 syllables so is quicker to say than the 3 syllable playstation

Cons: Xbox 360 is is 5 syllables so is longer to say than Playstation 3!

Im going to buy a PS3 just so when i have to tell people what i have i wont be wasting those valuable seconds when i could be playing! :D

Kinect for Exercise & Parties
PSP for Portable RPG goodness
360 for Gears of War and Forza
PS3 for Uncharted and Heavy Rain
3D0 for headaches and long term eye problems

Megadrive > SNES.

(More seriously, I have both consoles and prefer the Xbox for online gaming. A much greater percentage of players have voice comms and the whole experience feels much more integrated.)

The simple answer is that they're both great consoles. I own both, and though I play mainly on the 360, the PS3 is a great console with some fabulous games. inFamous and Demon Souls are two of the best games in recent memory. Each console does a few things better than the other, so the easy answer is to buy both :D

Is there any difference between the Blu Ray output of the PS3 and a stand alone one? I notice many Hifi and Home cinema mags would like you to think there is.

Hifi and home cinema mags might just have a vested interest in getting you to buy a Blu Ray player, considering where their advertising revenue comes from.

I'm well aware of that but has anyone done side by side comparison and confirmed any differences if any?

Rarely game on my PS3. Exclusives only and I use the Bluray drive always for movies. I love my 360 and I look to it first for dual-platform and exclusive games....I prefer it's controller and XBL.

I'd hate to be without either of them.

I have a host of friends on my 360 and that's mainly what I want to do, chat with friends and have fun. I can't stand Homefront MP on my own, but with a party of friends it's a blast.
Having said that, if all my friends were on the PS3 all the time, I'd play that.
Any short-comings of either console are soon overlooked as the pros for both far outweight the cons on both.
I think, OP, your real problem is having a friend who tells you you'd be "stupid" to do something they clearly have little experience of. Just give them a bit of abuse and tell them to mind their own business, or have a jolly good console war bust up with him.
