I've had enough. My 730d is in the dealers AGAIN for another 3 faults. I had the same sort of experience with my A8 before and I'm sick of it. It's under warranty but by July it'll have done 110k and so un-warrantyable (is that a word?)
As soon as the car is back, it's going on Autotrader or getting Pxed against a Honda Accord or a Ford Mondeo that's under 2 years old and under 20k miles. Driving for business I can't afford to be stuck in limp mode 300 miles from home.

730d faults so far:

Gearbox stuck in limp mode - Fixed with a mechatronics replacement and new fluid
iDrive crashes every few days - Unable to be fixed so far
Gearbox slipping during gear changes - In for investigation
Missfire at 70mph causing EML light illumination - In for investigation
Grinding noise coming from Air-Con compressor - In for investigation

Much as I love the big execs I'm beginning to feel that once they are out of warranty they are just not worth it any more due to the complexity. This wasn't the case in the past but it seems that it's this way now.

Probably an obvious winge to most of you.

warrenty doesnt provide an on the spot replacement while yours is being fixed?

What happens when something messes up and he's 300 miles away at 9PM?
When Hermann eats a bratwurst, he becomes BMW MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN

Sounds like you got a problematic one, try another before you resign yourself to a Mondeo.

This is something that was always going to happen sooner or later, so many features on new cars these days are just extra things to go wrong in 5 years time.

Too many gizmos and gubbins controlling cars over the last few years I think.

But then again I would say that when owning a decade old barge. :p

I agree.

I hate all these electronic ratsnests on the new cars. Half of is really unnessesary.

You dont really NEED electronically adjustable seats, you dont really need a computer controlled gearbox either!

Id prefer to do most of that manually.

Obviously the basics should still be there, like CD changer, Climate control etc, but half of the silly stuff these days is useless.

I dont want a car beeping at me if I havent put my seatbelt on. I decide when I want to put the belt on, NOT the car.

GRRR, stupid "modern" machines!

I had one of my cars paralysed last week by a body control fault that caused the indicators and most of the trip functions to fail, as well as permanently jamming the wipers on.

Great, just great.

Pathetic fusebox design meant you couldn't pull the fuse for the wipers either, but not knowing what else might be inoperative, I decided to leave it well alone....

Fact of life I'm afraid modern cars are more likely to give you an IRQ conflict than a proper 1980's style breakdown that the AA man could actually fix on the roadside there and then.

Computers on wheels tbh.

Yours sincerely,

Mr V Meldrew.

Im pleasantly surprised that you are quite the opposite of what you username suggests dawg :)

Aren't there any options that give the best of both worlds? I remember you having a load of grief with the A8 but didn't you have a good experience with a Lexus a few years back?

This is what I keep saying - modern prestige cars are complex and unreliable.

But you know that going in dont you, so this one has had a few mis haps, if you cant afford them dont buy them.
