Minecraft - What a strange game.

Really???

Going by how much attention the game has, I thought it was done with so many people playing and recommending it.

If I remember rightly, the game sold over a million copies while it was still in alpha.

It's a pretty unusual development model. No doubt about that.

I'm going to get flamed for this, I know, but I've spent a little time on Minecraft to get to know it, and it gave me the same useless crap vibe that Farmville did.

I don't get how people can love this an hate something like Farmville at the same time, basically I find it a very similar tiresome trudge.

Well you are very much entitled to your own opinion...

but you are wrong, very very very wrong.

You're probably right, and I must be missing out somewhere. So many people think this is great and I just can't understand it, so it must be something wrong with me.
Possibly it's because I've never been a very creative person, and this is perhaps what's needed. I'm the typical consumer, but without us, where would the creative people be? :)

I've never really been a creative person either. It did take me a while to get into it but once you start digging and find your first coal or iron ore vein you'll be hooked and from there the sky is the limit (or rather the rather paltry maximum height that I built my skull tower fortress up to is the limit).

I suppose this is a bit like lego on steroids. Doesn't really achieve much but it's fun and creative.

Minecraft, like so many sandbox games, depends hugely on what you find enjoyable. If you're someone who loved lego when you were younger, and likes nothing better than to create huge and/or beautiful structures then you'll love it.

To give you my personal Minecraft history, I started playing in early alpha and have seen the various stages of development and got to know the very large community that loves the game. I play every now and then (not every day, but a few times a week) and host a server on my own network that my kids both play (5 and 9). They both love it as it's the ultimate environment for role-playing for them, and by varying the mods we use (bukkit provides a good starting point) they can do pretty much whatever they want.

The fact that I'm still playing on and off after over a year (for £8) says a lot about it. But.... it's got to be your sort of thing. There's no point to it, but then again there's no point to lego and that was the beauty - you got out of it what you put into it, i.e. your time and imagination.

I know loads of friends who I've introduced to Minecraft and they've hated it, but also some that have loved it. Marmite in gaming terms.

My advice is give it another go on a well run multiplayer server - it has a wonderful co-operative ethos to it, and building stuff together is fun!

Minecraft no-where near comparison to farmville, farmville is a 2D from top view of cropping a farm which is a facebook app.

Minecraft is everything you want it to be, for example if you feel like building a big fortress with lava you can do that.... the possibilities are endless. At first i thought what attracts me to this game. it's not high in graphics or reallife textures, your not with a MAC10 on a killing spree. This game is so unique because no-one has ever done this, its awsome.

Oh, I don't know. To me it looks and feels like a map- and item editor without a game to go with it.
Does anyone remember the 3D Construction Kit?

Lol - sort of proves my point. It *is* a map and item editor... that's the game.

If you want more, you can use a variety of mods to add more danger/content, but vanilla Minecraft *is* a map/item editor... :D

If a person can't enjoy Minecraft then they really only have themselves to blame. It's the greatest playground for the imagination ever devised. You get out of it as much as you put in.

IMHO, of course ;)

The aim of the game is to Survive, as night falls different types of mobs appear, like spiders, skeletons and the devil itself Creepers. unless you have it on peacefull mode. this game itself even though not graphically high is just unexplainable, you can also add different character, texture packs that it's the only game i know that's so modable. You can have a hight tower on top of the highest hill, deep caves to your dungeon, big cities that take your breath away... this isn't any old game that will be left in a corner to die this is minecraft and will be remembered for years.

I don't really think there will ever be DLC, the game is no where near finished at this point either.

I'm sure Notch has always said that once he's finished with it he'd hand everything over to the modders.

I'm pretty sure Notch has a company set up to take care of Minecraft and he's working on another project right now.

There's been AMA by Notch a couple of days ago on reddit. http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/gjrf4/iama_indie_game_developer_who_made_a_commercially/

One of the many articles commenting on the future updates for Minecraft - those buying in beta will not necessarily get the future updates (the ones after the official release) for free. That put me off from buying the game.

And there was a mention of that on the Minecraft's website for months, I can't either find it now or it's not there any more.

There's plenty of games that are moddable from scratch.

I downloaded this last night and was thinking exactly the same thing! hours passed and I realised I hadnt done anything but build a rubbish house, dug a very deep hole and got a bit scared of those zombies.
I think I need to give it more of a chance. Or does it come into it's own on multiplayer?

i would give it a chance, with the new update 1.5 there will be rain & snow, Thunder and Lightning, I can see it know im building in my base it's a nice sunny day, Cows are mooing, sheep are barring. Then it becomes overcast and thunder and lightning starts and it begins to rain. i panic and run into my base as torches are dampened and it becomes dark, i can know hear mobs creeping around as the thunderstorm is overhead.... I then load myself with armour and a sword and attack them. EPIC
