What winds you up most when you're driving?

The only place I tend to get to enjoy my car is on twisty slip roads on my commute to and from work, it really does my head in when someone sits in the overtaking lane doing 60 thinking that if they cant go any quicker then neither can you, if its ok to undertake I sometimes do so to the absolute disgust of the lane hogger who always seem to get angry when you do so

So many oxygen theives

  • People who decide they know better than the speed limits, driving at 40 in a 60 zone, then staying at 40 when the speed limit drops to 40 in a built up area, logic?
  • People who think they are the safest drivers on the road because they drive slowly, and then proceed to cut someone up at a junction or nearly run someone over.
  • People who drive at 25-30 in a 60 zone then speed up to 60 whenever there is an overtaking opportunity.
  • People who pull out of a junction and make me slow down when there is not a single car in sight.
  • People who sit and wait at junctions then change their mind and pull out at the last minute.

I am sure there are plenty more where they came from

I was told 36 years ago to do it and had to do it on my test.
I don't know if you still have to do it though.

You're told not to do it now unless you think it will benefit the person behind you.

e.g. if you are waiting to pass a parked car as on-coming traffic approaches, and the road behind you that was clear now has a car approaching, you could use your indicator to show that you are not a parked car and you are waiting to overtake, however if you are in the same position and the car behind was there all the time and seen you slow down to wait and overtake the parked car, you wouldn't need to indicate.

Edit: I'm saying now, I mean when I did my test 9 years ago.

I'm with dmpoole on this one, my instructor told me to do it (and that was only what 5 years ago)

Well, you would fail it now, out right.
In fact when I took my test in 1992 I would have failed it out right too, for misleading other road users.

Really? because I took my test after 1992 and would have failed it for not doing it, the is nothing misleading about it.

everyone winds me up when driving lol
absolute worst is people that drive 10-20mph below the speed limit and everyones being held up.

I took my HGV test last year and you most certainly do get told not to do it.

You do not indicate to overtake parked cars, the following and oncoming traffic expects you to drive around it and make progress.

You get told not to do it on your motorbike test, on your car test and on your HGV test.

I was told to indicate to pass parked cars in my HGV test 4 yrs ago
idea was so the vehicle behind knew your intention was to move out

I can't remember tbh but i think it was more in the situation where you would have to breach the white line and go in to the other side of the road though, possibly having to stop and wait behind the parked car until there was a gap in oncoming traffic

I usually indicate to pass parked cars in the truck if there's another truck behind me, or as said if I have to stop to wait to get round the car, so the person behind doesn't just think i'm stopping for no reason and tries to pass me whilst I'm waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic

People who don't indicate on the motorway. They are in the majority, and the majority of which are in flash cars who like to jump into a faster lane with a foot to spare in front of me. These people are total scum.

Bikes that think they own the road (yet I am a biker) people doing silly speeds in 30's, people going 10mph in 30's people that don't indicate, people that think they own the road because they have a "60" plate car! People that moan if you ever did 75 on a motorway at a sensible time! People that moan because you have a car that drinks lots of fuel, people that drive at 40mph everywhere whatever place they are, people that are old and can't really drive! People that park next to you yet you park a mile away in the carpark so that nobody scratches your car, people that park next to you and just open then door without car of hitting your car, people that moan at young drivers that they are all bad drivers!

Not that I like to moan or anything :P

I usualy indicate when passing parked cars, was told to for my driving test, but I've recently passed my ROSPA test (Gold) and they teach you not to indicte and that the car moving over itslf is enough of an indication.

My pet hate drives me up the wall every day.
Slip road etiquette;
The driver on the main carriageway is in no way obliged to pull out and let traffic from the slip road on, coming from the slip road onto the main carriageway the white line crossed is a give way line.
Now I try to be courtous and pull over when I can, usually this ends up in the other driver speeding up and undertaking or just sitting at the same speed, forcing me to speed up or slow down. If I can't pull over usually people just drift out with no thought as if it's their right to pull out in front, best case they notice just as they are pulling out and slam on the brakes making it worse, instead of speeding up to join at the same speed as the flow of traffic.

Of course not everyone is like this but I see it every day on my commute to work.
Note- Dual carriageway; there aren't many 3 lane stretches in Scotland.

No, I passed 2 and a half years ago and was taught to indicate round parked cars.

Ditto.

These days I use my common sense. If it's blindingly obvious to the vehicle(s) behind that there's parked cars to go around I won't indicate, but if I think it'd be useful to them I do indicate.

For me its people who sit at the same speed wherever they go... all the time near me I end up behind someone doing 40 in a 60, then 40, then 30 limit.

Not obliged to correct. But the number of morons who have no traffic in the middle or fast lane yet choose to straddle the slow lane is ever increasing. Some common sense would not go amiss with these people. As you would expect if they fail to budge then there are only 2 options, unleash the turbo or slam the brakes and stop on the slip road. I usually go for the former ;)

most of my gripes are specific to driving a lorry but one that winds me up is people who try to take the 'racing line' to go round roundabouts/corners faster, and end up on 'your side' of the road, which you probably need
people who don't use slip roads when turning off dual carriageways really annoys me, i.e they wont use the slip road, instead they'll slow down on the main road and throw the car round the corner at the last minute, so the corner's not as sharp, so they can go an extra 5mph round the corner
