Can somebody explain Blackberry's and teenage girls please

It's also good for me as my parents live in an area with no phone reception, so i just tether it to their wifi and can still send texts.

yep thats handy but its not a feature of BBM, it (UMA) is a blackberry feature that allows calling over the internet as well. Though its always been a bit flakey on my phone.

Orly? Didn't know that! How does it work then? My phone always fails calls while there so do i have to specify it to do so or sommat?

from what i remember it has to be supported by the network but i'd be surprised if there are any that dont support it these days. orange certainly does. you just have to make sure that 'prefer wifi' is selected in the mobile network options screen (you can get to it through options or the manage connections app) but i guess you must already have that if you can send texts lol. could be something on their router blocking it maybe?

there's info here: http://www.blackberryforums.com/wifi-hotzone/110477-uma-explained.html

in order for your wifi ap at home to work with uma it must support ipsec passthrough and the firewall must have the ipsec ports open (udp ports 500, 4500,50 and 51).

I remember reading BBM in the personals section of the Staines Informer in the 1980 and 1990s, I'm amazed that people had Blackberrys back then.

I want genuine replies why we have this phenomena of Blackberry's being the main toy of choice of young girls (here in Stoke anyway).
Does it have some type of multi networking abilities that other phones don't have or is it just a case of follow the leader?
Yesterday when I was buying a spare San Francisco two young girls with their Mother were adamant that was the phone they wanted even though the assistant tried to give alternatives at the Mother's request.

Because they don't know how good an iPhone 4 is with WhatsApp :p

Price probably also helps, they tend to be cheaper, or available on fairly cheap contracts.

I just use email for sending photos if i need to. That is free, what benefit does bbm have over email in this regard?

At a guess I'd say: easier to set up & instant notifications

I fits both of the above, but I doubt many teenage girls will want to spend their time setting up an email account that supports push.

I wouldn't even say it's BBM, I think that comes alongside it, it's mostly "fashion".

Over the last 48 hours, I have sent just over 200 texts...this is about average for me. I'm definitely average for a teen, though on top of that I use Google Talk and FB Chat on my phone quite a lot. There are months, however, where I turn into a teenage girl.

a text every 15 mins..... if i did that i'd have no time to do anything. Did you not think I can call this person or write an email in 5 mins and it'll save me 5 hours?

Another mobile phone phenomena where people will waste hours to get proper replies where ringing them up for 30 seconds would have got the instant reply.
I don't get it.

Couldn't agree more dm. I get a measly 100 txts a month in with my bundle and use. maybe 10 of them. I much prefer to actually talk to a person and get the conversion done and dusted.

But I'm old and actually like to talk to people..

My niece is constantly checking her phone every 2 mins. It really is like an addiction.

As a teen, a text every ten minutes or so isn't that bad :D Most of then are to my gf in all fairness, but then again, I get free calls to her too xD If something is important I'll still ring, obviously.

I send around 200 texts a month, and most of those are to do with work, my 13 year old on the other hand send a couple of thousand a month!.

Most of them are stuff like

LOL

or

:-)

or

XX

or

WUU2?

or

ILU2

waste of airwaves IMO :)

It just seems like a lot of teens just feel like they have to say something, constantly, just to be part of the 'in crowd' even if when they do say something they're not really saying much at all!

Everyone i have ever met who has a BB say they break constantly, and its a headache to keep getting it swapped every 3-6 months.
+1 This has happened to aload of people i know.
Being 16 most of my friends have them only the geeky people have android phones.(i have one)

I think for what these devices can do the price vs performence from a technical point of view is spot on. The BB messenger works for people too because everyone with a Blackberry is on it that I know of.

^^ I don't know anyone that has had to have a Blackberry replaced, only ones is the ones who have lost them and not had them insured.
