BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Had a phone-call from BT on Friday announcing my area is going Fiber Optic in September.

Can't wait to be honest, at the moment we currently get 3mbps.

I live in a small village, we always get left behind...

¬.¬

seeing those speed tests just makes me feel sick, i pay the same amount as BT infinity but im not in a fiber optic area and i only get 4mb if im lucky.

this thread makes me cry.

dont worry mate good things come to those who wait.

im also on 4mb (best i get is 450kbs) its perfectly fine for gaming even at 64 players+ and can load web pages fast as i need as i read and scroll down most of the images have usually loaded and small music files / 50meg doesnt take too long just a 2 mins im fine to wait that long.. faster steam DL would be good and movie tv over internet is a no,no but i buy blueray anyhow. however even with a new master socket, street cab wires re crimped ive found it can still cut off from time to time and needs a handset lift to reset as i have 'high open' on the line. problem stems from being at the bottom of a long street in a remote`ish village on old copper where the lines run close to each other its rare though thankfully

i can guarantee you will get faster broadband before me, my connection goes 2 miles to the next village and then a further 2 miles to the main town exchange which is old and crap! we wont get our own local exchange EVER and therefore fiber will be probably 10 years or more away for me :( probably just to the next villages cab and then **** copper all the way to my home

y'know what, total internet speed is not everything living in a nice area is better :D

Infinity Availability / Capibet Upgrade > 01-July-2011

BT can suck a giant monkey, those were originally supposed to be March of this year!
They can also suck a giant monkey as the exchange here was in the 3rd wave of exchanges to get ADSL back in the day ... and now it's one of the later ones to get FTTC

My exchange was supposed to be done in November last year, finally got done March 18th
A delay in the estimate seems the norm.

Unfortunately those two things you want to know about (QoS & NAS) are features I've never used, sorry!

What I would say is: If you want a great reliable router, get the Draytek. If you want awesome WiFi, get the Netgear.
If you're in the lucky position that I was and have the cash for both, get them both. Use the 2920n as a Router and the WNDR3700 as an Access Point like I am (I actually have the WNDR3700 running off of a switch on the other side of the house). You could actually get the 2920 instead of the 2920n if you're getting a WNDR3700 to be an access point, but when I was buying the 2920 was only something like £5 cheaper than the 2920n so I got the 2920n (for my house I need as many access points as possible!)

As an example of the routing performance difference, in SNB's review of the WNDR3700 they found it supported 4096 simultaneous sessions... the 2920n supported 34925 simultaneous sessions!

hey thanks anyways mate i kind of guessed that would happen as its normally a right nightmare trying to find out what works and what doesnt with computer hardware.

I will resort to one final google session tonight :(

Oh god!

Was just about to start a thread on this, and see its already 13 pages in!

Investigating the BT infinity option.

Currently with Bethere, and get download speeds of 1.8Mbps, which si good. No traffic shaping unlimited usages, so all is good.

What is bad however which is making me investigate BT Infinity, is they keep having on of issues with some websites simply being inaccessable or timing out. This has been carrying on for months now.

It sounds like its a third party issue with one of their carriers, but its still unacceptable.

I looked at Virgin, but its not available in my area. So next fastest option is BT Infinity.

Iv got a BT phone line, so technically I could get faster broadband and save on the total bill of phone and broadband, but im turned of by BT's track recoed concerning phorm etc.....

Do they traffic shape? Snoop? Is unlimited basically unlimited? I dont abuse my line, but when I download 10-15Gb in an evening from steam, I dont want them saying 'naughty' naughty'!

Have you actually checked it's available for you yet? It's not widespread by any means yet.

If it's available and you can only get 1.8Mb/s from your current line, you can't really go wrong - should get at least 10 times that from Infinity. Infinity is now completely uncapped, but they have a prioritizing system in place with P2P and Newsgroups given low priority - so throughput will depend on how congested the network is - no strict throttling though and people have been getting good speed over newsgroups during peak hours though so looks like the network has plenty of capacity currently.

Its defintly availabe in my area.

A few months back, the whole neighbourhood, had no internet for 3 days, as BT where installing the equipment.

Also the cabinet is about 2 mins walk from me.

I would join. But Be there have been great to me over the years. Its just I feel I may have out grown them now, and they are having on going network problems...

Just been reading through the thread. Everything sounds great, but obviously I have concerns about p2p torrent usage. Really the only things I download is tv programs, how much? Not much at all.

At present 2-3 tv shows a week max size maybe 700-1gb. There are shows I havent seen yet, which I will download from the begining, but as long as they dont cap it to the point where it takes hours to get a 500mb file thats fine.

Yea max speed I get is 18.0Mb/s presently (thats my download speed by the way). Its fast enough, its more the on going network issue Be are experiencing thats the problem.

That and the fact that I could save money and get faster speeds with a BT Broadband/phone bundle.

Im scared to leave Be there tho. When you find a home thats comfortable, you dont want to leave.

What about blocking sites like filesonic, oron.com, rapidshare etc.....

Bethere do block these as well sometimes, depending on what the IWF decided. But to be honest, all ISP's are meant to abide by the IWF rules anyway, so again its probably not a big issue.

Also, belive it or not, I do not have a master socket in my house. The house is from the 1950's....

When I first was with Bethere, I was getting 800mbps max speed download speed. Then I removed all the ring wires in the telephone sockes and speeds jumped from 800mbps up to where I am now 1.8MB/s.

So concidering I have no master socket, how will BT install the equipment? I take it its more than just a router that gets installed?

A lot of people seem to ignore the fact that "Infinity" is merely BT Retails name for FTTC/VDSL2.

You don't fancy the idea of an 18 month contract? You're concerned about traffic management? Fine. There are other FTTC/VDSL2 providers out there!

opethdisciple in answer to your specific concerns I was with Be from the beginning but I moved last summer to Idnet and their "Fibre" products. Do I miss certain aspects of Be? Sure I do but you seem to be concentrating on "Infinitys" shortcomings and not realising there's other alternatives.

all ISP's are meant to abide by the IWF rules anyway

Not true.

There's no legal requirement for any UK ISP to sign up to the IWF but the government only use those that do to provide services to public bodies.

You may have trouble with torrents on Infinity if you want to download on a weekend or at peak time. I haven't had Infinity long, but from the limited tests I've done on torrents which I would expect to max out my connection, I get under 20kb/s at peak times.

I mainly use newsgroups though, which run at full speed, 4.4mb/s even at peak times. I've not seen newsgroups throttled at all.

That in a nut shell is Be there's advantage. No traffic shapping ever at any time.

But max speed of 18Mbps and on off network issues......

But inaccessable websites is unacceptable, which is why Im thinking about BT..

What are the peak times that BT cap torrents?

I've never paid attention, i have a HP EX470 that 8TB of drives running 24/7 with utorrent on the desktop. Only thing i could do to improve the setup would be to add a scratch drive that would allow the others to spin down and reduce wear, used to use a USB drive but since i got BTi the downloads are faster than the write speed of the 16gb drive i was using :)

I was planning to take it easy, yet for the first 2 months i've used it i've hit the 300gb mark... i blame the backlog that had built up from using 2mb/s O2 broadband

If you download during the 'traffic managed' times, the speed totally sucks but as the box i have downloads off an RSS feed and works all hours i never watch the queue i just check the incoming folder for new stuff to watch

if you have a machine that you can leave to download overnight, then tbh its not that big an issue, i did used to sit at the pc and browse or do whatever while i waited 30mins for a show to download but if you can kick that behavior then you'll be fine

BE / O2 are already traffic shaping for some customers, and it's only going to get worse.

For people who are in an area wher ethe exchange has been enabled but the checkers say Infinity is not available, you need to remember that your cabinet may not have been installed or is not yet active.

There is also the possibilty thay your area may not have a cabinet installed at all.

Right, I need some honest opinions on Infinity before I jump ship from Virgin. I can get Infinity in my area.

I currently have 50 meg with them, and I have had enough of how they ruined XBOX Live with the traffic management.

What sort of traffic management does BT have?

Does it impact on XBOX Live at all?

Anything else I should be aware of? I do not want to jump from the fire and into the frying pan with an 18 month BT contract.

Basically I want to know all the stuff they don't tell you on their site.

Which newsgroups do you use that give you full 4.4mb/s?
