BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

O2 may traffic shape, but BE definetly do not.

Its at the core of their philosophy.

When they say its uncapped and not shapped, thats exactly what it is.

The issue, now is that they have on going nework issues, where some sites are inaccessable and I could save money whilst doubling my connection speed with BT infinity.

But Im scared to be honest. 18months is a long time. We are right at the begining of the whole digital economy bill.

The last thing I want is to be tied in to an 18month contract when the digital economy bill hits full swing!

so when say I want to download an episode of spartacusfor instance 1.5Gb via p2p during peak times... what do you estimate speeds will be like?

When are the off peak times anyway?

Which newsgroups do you use that give you full 4.4mb/s?

I use Supernews on the $9.99 a month special offer:

If you're downloading by torrent at peak times the speeds will be terrible, under 20kb/s most likely. Outside of peak times the speeds should be fine. You might want to use newsgroups if you want full speed all the time.

I think peak periods are 4 or 5pm to midnight, and possibly all day at the weekend.

So News Groups are the logical evolution of the torrent I suppose?

Especially with them cracking down on p2p.

I guess I could do all my torrenting after 12pm.. but it is a bit of an inconviniece.

Can any one tell me equipment wise, do BT have to install anything other than the router?

Also as I want a wired ocnnection rather than wireless, my current router is upstairs in my loft, would I be able to put the infinity router upstairs in my loft too?

Well I now have a before and after to share :)

I am very happy, especially as I do a fair amount of video uploading!

They install a new master socket, then there is a modem and a separate router. The engineer that installed mine changed an extension socket to become the new master socket, so I could have the equipment where my old ADSL modem used to be. This might also be possible for you if you have an extension socket in the loft that could be changed to the new master socket.

Damn that's fast!

Leased lines across London, so its going to be fast.

Im tempted by BT infinity.

It sounds like I will double my speeds and actually save money, on broadband and phone bundle.

Scared tho, with the whole phorm fiasco, and torrent throttling...

Its a shame Be there are having network issues as really 18mbps is fast enough, but on going problems is driving me mad.

I think we should take a look at some of the other FTTC providers:

ZEN

AAISP

TalkTalk

ADSL24

Honestly I think it's best to avoid BT Infinity. It's BT, they'll stab you in the back eventually! =)

Also ThinkBroadband is, as ever, the ultimate broadband resource, I think it lists all the ISP's offering FTTC.

its ok looking at others, but look at there pricing and usage allowances. if moneys no object fine, but bt is good value.

Yea, was looking at the others, but far too expensive.

Plus your buying the package from a third party.

Why not just deal with BT as they own the lines and equipment etc...

BT are stretched too thin at the moment. For example. I am trying to get a business phone line for ADSL2+ installed, and as any company requires BT Openzone to do it for them (even 'BT' as it's part of the BT Group) it forced us to wait more than a month. Just to have someone come over and connect a new line. Customer service is not good, they (BT) didn't even give me an installation date, until I called them to cancel my order. At least other providers have the courtesy to give reliable information.

They're also throttling and no matter what people have said, I understand they don't have enough bandwidth, ie, they are overloaded. Some people on TB forums have complained that their connections have slowed down after about 25 people connected to the same cabinet had Infinity.

That in a nut shell is Be there's advantage. No traffic shapping ever at any time.

But max speed of 18Mbps and on off network issues......

But inaccessable websites is unacceptable, which is why Im thinking about BT..

What are the peak times that BT cap torrents?

"Downstream restrictions will typically be in place 4pm - midnight on weekdays and 9am - midnight on the weekend" - BT

Are you saying dont go infinity?

Still www.newsnow.co.uk is inaccessable using Bethere. There are users on the Be forums reporting issues with other sites.

This is not a one off, they have been having these issues for months, and before that it was DNS issues.

I'm with Be, and that site works fine.

Also thinking of going FTTC, but i dont want BT either... I've had way to many issues with them in the past.... :/

EDIT: You guys seen the Google Spreadsheet thats kept upto date by a couple of guys @ the TBB forums.?

Bit of a horror story from this guy:

http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infinity/1-5-Month-BT-Infinity-review/td-p/98367

Over all those using infinity, do you see consistant speeds, all sites are accessable, no dns issues?

Torrenting sounds like a problem really, as it sounds like the only time you can torrent is after 12am... not that I torrent much, but the odd TV program would be nice.

Whats the general consensus, to infinity or not?

Well i dont blame any of you as im still confused and sitting on the fence debating who to go with isp wise and which router to get is a nightmare also as i dont want my connection dropping with the home hub and DLM forcing me onto interleaved FTTC.I remembered that p2p is also affected if i game on peaktime as i hear shogun 2 uses p2p so im afraid i dont think i will be going with BT.

Zen cost too much i think but are brilliant as my 8MB line with them has been rock solid for the last 3 yrs.Has anyone thought of Aquiss? Right now im thinking of the IDNET home superpro fibre as you get elevated best efforts(traffic priority)but aquiss let you add this to any package for £7pm and change to 10mb upload from £1.20 odd per month so i have to tally it up as they seem to have nice flexibility.£30 ex vat for 45gb peaktime fibre then add in the above options.

Whats really worrying me though is the latency and interleaving. The more i read the more i panic as the DLM profiles have either interleaving on or off and the isp cannot alter it or can BT so you might end up with double the latency off your old adsl max without interleaving.Cross talk and the fact that BT only guarantee a 8MB throughput for residential and 12MB for business is another worry if spending a lot of money on a premium isp your going to be pretty angry if your exchange or bts own backhaul is doing the congesting and your isp cant help even though you pay £50pm.

Am i supposed to just dip my toes with 18 month contract or something and hope for the best? PFF:confused: Oh and why can BT offer 16MB elevated best efforts when IDNET can only offer 12MB? I asked via phone support that it was really 16MB but they said i was wrong and it was 8mb and 12mb for elevated best efforts. This conflicts with the official BT business site that clearly states 16MB best efforts and unlimited for £45pm.

And also has anyone actually had the dlm force interleaving on? And on that point also i see a rumour that from summer BT will allow control over interleaving? Claimed by aquiss here

http://forums.aquiss.net/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4616&start=10

"Pings are higher than when I was on ADSL but not enough so that it would make any noticeable difference"

There is currently no control over Interleaving. This options becomes available during the summer.

Im really glad i have the option to get FTTC but BT have still been complete tools with the DLM and crosstalk and best efforts.Im sorry but 8MB from a 40MB connection is pretty pathetic considering all the prices for fttc are around £40-£50 pm.
