Usually there are a bunch of games that are quoted as being 'must have' titles. I might be missing something here but I can't remember the last must have since the days of HL2 when everyone was banging on about how you had to have it and it was the dogs etc.

Lately I don't think I have seen any really big hype for any games that have been releases or are due for release in the next few months. I am guessing Crysis 2 was a big release, but maybe I am getting old, I just didn't see much hype around it. I remember seeing on the news people queuing up to get their hands on the new WOW expansion.

I assume also that the new Deus Ex will be a must have title, but what about titles that are out now, or classics that should be in every PC gamers hands ?

Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake, Quake. Any Quake game, right now most notable is Quake Live. And Half Life.

e :
And, Amnesia: The Dark Descent!!
STALKER series
Counter Strike
Super Meat Boy :p

Those are the "must have" PC exclusives I can think of.

PC is pretty much used nowadays for console ports nearly always producing the best version on the PC so pick any game you like from the last 3-4 few years then buy the PC version for superior visuals & or mods. Since Crysis1 there has not really been anything must buy on PC other than you get the best gfx & for several games + the mods can make a difference.

Fallout3 is probably the best example of a recent great PC game with plenty of mods. You have to remember that most games on consoles are running sub HD resolutions & look awful plus have screen tearing, minimal AA, low AF & FPS issues as they nearly always cannot handle the actual game engine so the compromises to make them playable on console produce terrible gfx compared to the PC version.

I suppose because there's so many different things at the moment (quantity, not necessarily quality ;) ), it is hugely subjective. A must have for one person might be rubbish to someone else.

Depends what games you are into really. No point saying must have FPS is you dont like FPS's. I could guarantee that if I list my personal must have titles, either the few recentish ones or my classics, 90% of them could easily be argued by others. Portal 2, Deus Ex, Skyrim, Witcher 2, Duke Nukem are all games which could be classics in their own right this year. All sequals too which is where most of the hype is coming from to be honest.

Mechwarrior series
Mech commander series
Ground Control + X-pack and second game (no where near as good as first but still fun)

Deltaforce series?

COD 4
Bad Company 2
Team Fortress 2
Portal
Medieval 2

+ Civilization IV (with Beyond the Sword expansion)
+ The Witcher
+ Bioshock
+ Left4Dead2
+ GTA IV
+ LOTRO
+ Batman AA
+ Company of Heroes
+ Mount&Blade: Warband (especially with mods)

Most releases are multiplatform though.

most releases on the pc aren't on the consoles because the devs can't afford the costs and licensing (or have no interest in it) or they don't port well to a controller.

there are a huge amount of poc games heck just look on steam for an insane amount of games that aren't multi platform.

The last game I recall buying that wasn't cross-platform was X3 Reunion, which is technically 3 years old now.

I know what you're getting at, but indies aren't setting the trends or leading the industry market share, much as I'd like them to. Most revenue accrues to a handful of publishers...EA, Ubisoft, Vivendi (Activision-Blizzard etc).

Yes, the PC has a huge back catalogue, but again, that wasn't what I was addressing with my post. Apologies for the off-topic, lets get back to PC games.

To the OP's question, you'll have to be more specific, at least give us a couple of favourite genres :)
