PSU from Packard Bell

Hi guys. Before I build my current rig I had a Packard Bell IXtreme that was bought from PC W#!&d. I had upgraded the GPU to a 5770 and fitted a Corsair VX550w psu (I used this in my new rig until this week). The PSU supplied even fell short of the recommended wattage for the PC itself

Earlier this week my nice new HX850 arrived so I removed the VX550 and put it back in it's box for storage as a backup. In the box I found the old psu that came with the Packard Bell. Out of curiosity I opened it up. This is it:

Anyone have any ideas as to what the hell the chewing gum like stuff is, and why it's plastered all over the components?

Now I know oem parts for companies like PB are really cheap. but I wasn't expecting this.

Its actually a glue. That stuff is called 'potting' and is applied while being manufactured to keep everything in its rightful place and add support to otherwise delicate components. But that psu seems to have gone overboard with it.

Hear is a pic of another PSU that uses it

Damnit, I was really looking forward to bursting into this thread screaming NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I thought you were going to try and use the psu in a pc :(

Operation, sorry to be a major pain and thread hijacker, but i think my friend has the same PC as you, and is looking to get a new PSU and graphics card for his birthday. problem is, his PC is at uni, and he isnt, so he doesnt know what will fit.

first off, can you tell me if this is the case you have:

if it is, can you tell me how long a graphics card you can fit in the PC, because my friend doesnt know, and doesnt want to buy a card that wont fit. he can move his hard drive out of the way, so a hard drive blocking the graphics card wont be a problem.

he is looking to get the sapphire 5850

thanks :)

Reaper, the 5850's are supposed to be smaller than usual.

I'm guessing that it will fit if the case isn't too old.

Hi, no worries. That case is not the same as the one I had (mine was pretty much all black and less rounded):

but I would think it's basically the same with similar dimensions. As I mentioned, i had an HD5770 in there. It was an Asus Cucore that was 9 inches long and I don't recall it being cramped. I think the 5850 you linked to is the same length or maybe a bit shorter so it should fit.

There's no point looking at the PB site.

Tell him Just buy the 5850. I'm pretty sure it will fit. If it doesn't he can blame me which I'm sure will be ample comfort :)
